Government Could Delay 6 Airbag Rule By Up To 18 Months - More Time Needed
The much hyped mandatory 6 airbag rule for new cars which was set to go into effect next month could be delayed by as much as 18 months claims a new report.
The much hyped mandatory 6 airbag rule for new cars which was set to go into effect next month could be delayed by as much as 18 months claims a new report.
The new report by Autocar India cites industry sources that claim that there isn't enough airbag manufacturing capacity in India to meet the extra demand generated due to the implementation of the new rule.
The report claims that to meet the demand for airbags to help carmakers comply with the new rule, Indian component manufacturers would have to produce 18 million airbags which is around triple that of the current estimated production levels which are at around 6 million airbags every year.
The Government of India is now expected to delay the implementation of the 6 airbag rule to April 2024, though any conformation of the same hasn't yet arrived from the rule makers. This expected 18 month delay in the implementation of the mandatory 6 airbag rule should give manufacturers enough time to implement the changes need to expand production levels of airbags in the country while also helping carmakers to make the necessary changes needed to accommodate the extra safety devices.
While the mandatory 6 airbag rule will make cars a whole lot safer in India, the government's decision to fast track its implementation hasn't got a wholly positive response from the industry. The nation's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, has been a fierce critic of the government's upcoming rule claiming it could force it to leave the popular small car segment due to the rising costs.
By being strapped in, passengers inside the car are kept restrained in their seats which ensures that they are not flung around in case a crash happens. Airbags, on the other hands are most effective when the passenger is still strapped in their seats and usually will not even deploy if the seatbelt is not strapped in.
Thoughts On The Expected Delay For The 6 Airbag Rule
The 6 airbag rule is expected to be delayed by up to 18 months and is now expected to go into effect in by March 2024. Hopefully, the delay in the implementation of the 6 airbag rule will help the government and carmakers close off any loopholes that prevent the deployment of airbags in Indian cars today.
