3,000 Made-In-India Volkswagen Virtus Sedans Shipped To Mexico
In India, companies including Audi, Lamborghini, Porsche, Skoda, and Volkswagen are managed under the Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL). By the end of June 2022, the group has already exported more than 5,50,000 units of its cars to 44 countries across South America, Central America, Africa, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Caribbean region.
Out of all these regions, Mexico is the largest export market for Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL). That being said, SAVWIPL has now shipped 3,000 units of made-in-India Volkswagen Virtus sedans to Mexico.
However, unlike the Volkswagen Virtus sedan sold in India, the Volkswagen Virtus sedan exported to Mexico are Left-hand drive models to suit their driving regulations. Apart from that, the Volkswagen Virtus sedan variants sold in Mexico are slightly different to the ones sold in India.
For starters, though the Volkswagen Sedans sold in Mexico are available with two powertrain options, only the 1.0 TSI engine option is common between the two countries. However, the Indian version of the Volkswagen Virtus sedan equipped with the 1.0 TSI engine can be specified with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission, whereas the Mexican iteration of the sedan can only be specced with the 6-speed automatic transmission.
This means the more powerful 1.5 TSI engine is not available on the Volkswagen Virtus sedans sold in Mexico. However, Volkswagen offers a larger 1.6-litre petrol engine, and this engine is available with both manual and automatic transmission options.
However, there is nothing about this engine to cause envy (to Indians), as this is the same 1.6-litre engine that powered the Volkswagen Vento sedan sold in India. This engine produces just 108.9bhp of peak power and 152Nm of torque.
However, we are not sure Volkswagen Virtus sedans made in India are equipped with the older 1.6 MPI petrol engines.
Apart from that, according to the Volkswagen Virtus (Mexico) brochure, the model equipped with the 1.6 MPI engine and 6-speed automatic gearbox produces 145.9 grams of CO2 per km, and returns a fuel-efficiency (combined) of 16.5km/l. In comparison, the 1.0 TSI engine produces just 134.4 grams of CO2 and returns a better fuel-efficiency figure of 17.5km/l.
Apart from these, the Volkswagen Virtus sedan shipped to Mexico is identical to the ones sold in India with exterior dimensions measuring 4,561mm (length), 1,752mm (width), 1,507mm (height), and 2,651mm (wheelbase).
Recently, Volkswagen India completed 5,000 deliveries of the Virtus sedan in the country in just 2 months. This more than decent sales figures for the segment.
Speaking about the Volkswagen Virtus, the mid-size sedan is built on the same MQB-A0 IN platform as the Volkswagen Taigun, hence, it is a size larger than the Vento sedan it replaced. Moreover, the design of the Virtus sedan with its simple and sharp lines looks very clean and understated.
At present, the Volkswagen Virtus sedan sold in India is priced from Rs 11.21 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the base Comfortline variant. Whereas the Volkswagen Virtus sedan in Mexico is priced from Mex$ 324,990, which translates to around Rs 13.03 lakh.
Thoughts About Volkswagen Virtus Sedan
The Volkswagen Virtus is a decent sedan with plenty of space, and also comes with powerful yet very efficient engine options. We expect this sedan to be a decent seller for Volkswagen across the globe.
