German luxury carmaker Mercedes has revealed the second-gen GLC SUV. The new 2022 Mercedes GLC brings a fully electrified setup under the bonnet including new plug-in hybrid models and a brand new interior.
2022 Mercedes GLC Specs & Dimensions
The biggest changes in the new GLC come under the bonnet. Mercedes has electrified the GLC's engine options with the addition of a 48V mild-hybrid setup. The mild-hybrid setup adds 23bhp of power under hard acceleration. All models of the new GLC get a 9-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive as standard.
The 2 mild-hybrid petrol versions - GLC 200 and GLC 300 draw power from the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. In the GLC 200, the engine produces 201bhp and 320Nm of peak torque which is upped to 254bhp and 400Nm for the GLC 300.
The single mild-hybrid diesel option is the GLC 220d which sports a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-banger oil burner that cranks out 194bhp and 440Nm of peak torque.
In addition to the mild-hybrid versions, the new Mercedes GLC gets three plug-in hybrid models as standard - 2 petrol and 1 diesel. All plug-in hybrid models use the same 31kWh battery and a motor that puts out 134bhp and 440Nm of peak torque.
The petrol plug-in models are the GLC 300e and the GLC 400e which are based on the regular GLC 200 and GLC 300 respectively. The GLC 300e produces 309bhp and 550Nm of peak torque while in the 400e the output is upped to 376bhp and 650Nm which allows it to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 5.6 seconds.
The lone diesel plug-in model is the 300de which uses the same motor and battery combo with the 2.0-litre diesel engine to crank out 242bhp and 750Nm of peak torque.
The new 2022 Mercedes GLC sits atop the German carmaker's MRA2 platform. The new second-gen Mercedes GLC is 60mm longer than its predecessor at 4,716mm. The 2022 GLC SUV is also 2,075mm wide and 1,650mm tall (21mm narrower and 4mm lower).
While the wheelbase has increased by 15mm to 2,888mm, most of the extra length is near the rear overhang which allows for a larger boot that can hold 600 litres of luggage which is 50 litres bigger than the previous GLC.
The exterior design of the GLC features an evolutionary change with new headlights at the front and the AMG line models sporting new grilles with the three-pointed star pattern and a new sporty front apron section. Other trim versions of the GLC sport a chrome centre section for the lower section of the front bumper with the rear also getting a chrome 'diffuser' section.
The new GLC also gets body-coloured wheel arch trim pieces for the first time with the SUV sporting wheels ranging from 18 to 20 inches in size.
The interior is where the changes are more expansive. The old GLC's dated interior has been binned in favour of the one seen on the new C-Class. The new GLC now gets a 12.3-inch driver's display and 11.9-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment setup.
Owners can also option a new heads-up display and a 15-speaker, 710W Burmeister audio system.
Thoughts On The New Mercedes GLC
The second-gen Mercedes GLC brings with it a host of upgrades under the bonnet along with a brand new interior. These changes make the Mercedes GLC SUV something we're looking forward to experiencing once it arrives in India, which we expect is going to be sometime next year.
