Toyota Yaris Discontinued In India; Toyota Belta Coming Soon
Toyota Yaris discontinued in India. The move came into effect on September 27, 2021. The Toyota Yaris will be soon replaced by the Toyota Belta during the upcoming months.
Toyota launched the Yaris sedan in 2018. Though it was not a run-off success like other Toyota vehicles, it was a moderate performer for Toyota.
"Toyota Kirloskar Motor announces the discontinuation of Yaris in India with effect from 27th Sep 2021. This move is a part of Toyota's product strategy to continue to cater to the ever-evolving needs of the customer through enhanced technologies and product offerings. In every sense, the Yaris is truly a top-class, versatile sedan.
Ever since its India debut, the Yaris built on Toyota's QDR philosophy, won the hearts of the customers with its stunning style & design, leading features, low maintenance cost and unmatchable drivability, thus creating a unique ownership experience.
We thank all our customers for their support and placing their trust in the brand. We would like to continue to serve such customers with other current offerings and preparations are underway to launch new Toyota models in the coming new year 2022.
Further, Toyota will continue to seamlessly cater to all Yaris customers' needs through our dealer service outlets across the country, along with the promise of availability of Toyota genuine spare parts for minimum next 10 years on this discontinued model." read the official statement released by Toyota.
A year after the launch of the Toyota Yaris sedan in the country, Toyota mildly refreshed the Yaris sedan with a new dual-tone version and the following year introduced a BS6 compliant petrol engine.
Though Toyota Yaris is a decent sedan in its segment, it didn't offer anything unique in the segment that its competitors managed to do.
Back in 2018, when Toyota launched the Yaris sedan in India, it was offered only with a petrol engine while its competitors offered a choice of diesel engines along with petrol engines.
The 1.5-litre petrol engine powering the Toyota Yaris produced 106 bhp and 140Nm of torque and was mated to either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed CVT gearbox.
Though the engine was more than adequate for the Toyota Yaris and in some cases more powerful than competitors, the lack of a diesel engine made it difficult for some customers to even shortlist the Toyota Yaris sedan.
Despite competitors ditching their diesel engines due to more stringent emission regulations, Toyota failed to capitalise on the market shift by introducing major updates to attract buyers.
However, Toyota is adamant to have a piece of the sedan market in India, and it will soon fill the vacuum left by the now discontinued Toyota Yaris with the upcoming Toyota Belta sedan.
The upcoming Toyota Belta sedan has been spied a few times testing on the Indian roads, and it is essentially a re-badged Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.
Thus, the upcoming Toyota Belta will be powered by the same 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine from the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. This engine will produce 103 bhp and 138Nm of torque.
Gearbox options are also likely to be carried over from the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. This means the upcoming Toyota Belta could be specced with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Thoughts About Toyota Discontinuing The Toyota Yaris Sedan In India
The Toyota Yaris sedan was a decent offering from Toyota and did everything well. However, it failed to attract an average Indian buyer.
One of the main reasons for the average sales performance could be attributed to both the timing of the launch and the lack of a unique offering from Toyota in the segment.
