Toyota Hilux India Launch Imminent: Hilux To Compete With Isuzu HiLander & V-Cross
The Toyota Hilux is all set to debut in the Indian market. Toyota is bringing the pickup truck we all have been craving for in India - the Hilux. It is confirmed that Toyota will bring the 2021 Hilux to India and it will reportedly be priced very aggressively.
Measuring almost 5.3 metres in length, the Toyota Hilux is not your everyday vehicle despite being built on the same IMV-2 platform that underpins the Toyota Fortuner as well as the Toyota Innova Crysta.
The new Toyota Hilux is most likely to come with the Innova Crysta's 150bhp 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine and a rear-wheel drive layout on the lower variants. We also expect the higher variants of the Hilux to utilise the Fortuner's larger and more powerful 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine with 208bhp, of course with 4-wheel-drive.
Considering Toyota's plans of 'aggressive pricing,' we doubt the availability of 4X4 capability in entry-level variants. This though, might just sit well with Indian buyers and this lower variant will be perfect to take on the recently launched Isuzu HiLander
The Hilux will be slightly different from its siblings with the use of shorter gearing. The ruggedness is further enhanced by using sturdier leaf springs at the rear instead of coil springs, which is ideal for loading heavy objects.
In terms of design, the Hilux carries Toyota's signature design language. It gets a big and imposing hexagonal grille, and a pair of swept-back headlamps with bi-beam LED projectors and LED DRL's on higher variants.
On the sides, the SUV will flaunt alloy wheels on higher variants and may come with side steps as standard. We also expect a heavy presence of chrome elements on all sides of the higher variants of Hilux to please the Indian consumers.
When it comes to the interiors, we expect Toyota to utilise many components from the Fortuner and the Innova Crysta to keep the overall cost down. As the Hilux is primarily aimed at the set of niche customers flocking towards the Isuzu V-Cross, we expect some premium features to be added to the list.
The top-spec Toyota Hilux is expected to come with features like the larger 8.0-inch touch screen infotainment system from the Fortuner and Innova Crysta with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality.
The Toyota Hilux will compete with Isuzu's Hi-Lander and V-Cross, and they are priced between Rs 16.98 and 24.49 lakh. At the moment, we are unsure how Toyota is planning to price the Hilux range of pick-up trucks in India.
Thoughts On The Toyota Hilux Being Launched In India
Isuzu may have spawned this niche premium pickup truck segment in India with the V-Cross and now the HiLander as well. However, with the presence of Toyota in the segment, we expect a huge bump in sales and more customers flocking to buy pickup trucks. It certainly looks like this segment won't be 'niche' anymore.
