Cars are getting safer globally and in India and the 'desi' car manufacturers are leading the field. In this list of top-5 safest cars are manufactured by Indian car companies and not a single car is manufactured by a foreign car manufacturer.
1. Tata Punch
Tata Punch is the Indian car manufacturer's latest SUV and it is currently the safest car in India with 16.45 points out of 17 for adult protection and a 5-star adult safety rating from the Global-NCAP.
Apart from that, the micro-SUV scored 40.89 points out of 49 for child protection. Powering the new Tata Punch is an uprated 3-cylinder 1.2L Revotron petrol engine with 84.48 bhp and 113 Nm of torque.
Unlike the Tata Altroz, the Tata Punch comes with a choice of either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. Tata Motors has opened bookings for Rs 21,000 and the micro-SUV is priced from Rs 5.49 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
2. Mahindra XUV300
The Mahindra XUV300 is the second safest vehicle available in India with an adult protection score of 16.42 points out of 17. Moreover, it has also scored an excellent score of 37.44 points for child protection. Overall, the compact SUV from Mahindra gets a 5-star rating for adult protection and a 4-star rating for child protection from the Global-NCAP.
The Mahindra XUV300 is powered by two engine options. The petrol unit is a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine with 110 Bhp and 200Nm of torque, whereas the diesel motor is slightly bigger at 1.5-litres and this unit produces 116 Bhp and 300Nm of torque.
The Mahindra XUV300 is available in 4 trim levels and 6 exterior shades. Prices for the Mahindra XUV300 starts from Rs 7.95 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the base W4 variant and goes up to Rs 11.82 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the top-end W8(O).
3. Tata Altroz
Tata Altroz is currently the safest hatchback in the country with a 5-star safety rating for adult protection and a 4-star safety rating for child protection. The premium hatchback from Tata Motors scored 16.13 points for adult safety and 29 points for child safety in the Global-NCAP.
The Tata Altroz comes with 3 different engine options. The 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated Revotron petrol engine is identical to the one in the Tata Punch, whereas the more powerful 1.2-litre turbocharged variant produces 108.48 bhp and 140 Nm of torque. Finally, the 1.5-litre diesel unit produces 88.78 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. However, the Tata Altroz is offered only with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Prices for Tata Altroz start from Rs 5.85 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and the top-end model is priced at Rs 9.59 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
4. Tata Nexon
Tata started the habit of manufacturing 5-star safety rated cars with Tata Nexon. Moreover, the SUV has moved down on the list slightly as Tata Motors and Mahindra introduced even safer vehicles.
However, it is also the last vehicle in this list to have a 5-star adult protection rating from Global-NCAP with a score of 16.06, whereas for child protection, it falls short of its nearest competitor by scoring 25 points and getting a 3-star rating from Global-NCAP.
The Tata Nexon is powered by two engine options. The 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine produces 118 bhp and 170 Nm of torque, whereas the diesel unit is a 1.5-litre unit with 108 bhp and 260 Nm of torque. Tata Nexon range is priced from Rs 7.28 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
5. Mahindra Marazzo
Mahindra Marazzo is the only 7-seater vehicle on this list that scored a respectable 4-Star safety rating from Global-NCAP. The MPV from Mahindra even scored a commendable 22.22 points for child protection and 12.85 points for adult protection from Global-NCAP, making it the safest MPV in India.
Mahindra Marazzo is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine with 120.96 bhp and 300 Nm of torque. This torquey engine comes solely mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard.
Mahindra Marazzo prices start from Rs 12.42 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the base M2 variant, whereas the top-end M6+ variant costs 14.49 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
