Tata Nexon Hits 2,00,000 Units Production Milestone: What’s Next For the Compact SUV?

India is the sixth-largest automobile market in the world. As a result, the number of cars being launched in India is massive and so is the competition. The SUV segment is the most competitive in our market and in such a competitive market, if a car reaches such a milestone, it is a big deal indeed.

The Tata Nexon is one of the best compact SUVs in India. It looks great, drives well, and comes with loads of features. Tata Motors has targeted a variety of buyers with the Nexon and its multiple variants.

Thanks to the brilliant pricing and positioning, combined with the lengthy list of features on offer, the Tata Nexon is one of the best-selling compact SUVs in the country. It has been in the top-three best-selling compact SUVs in India for a long time now and we do not see it dropping from there anytime soon.

Tata Motors has now announced that 2,00,000 units of the Tata Nexon have been produced so far. The company has released images of the 2,00,000th unit of the Tata Nexon to roll off the assembly line at its factory in Ranjangaon, near Pune.

The 2,00,000th Tata Nexon was decked in the Foliage Green shade and was welcomed off the line with a small celebration marking the milestone. Mohan Savarkar, Vice-President & Product Line head as well as Rajesh Khatri, the Vice President of the passenger vehicles business unit were present at the assembly line to mark the occasion.

What's Next For The Tata Nexon?

The Tata Nexon is one of Tata Motors' finest vehicles on sale at the moment. It offers everything a compact SUV buyer would want. The cherry on top of the icing of course is the fact that it gets a 5-Star adult safety rating for Adult safety by Global NCAP. The Nexon was the first car in India to receive such a high rating and it has been praised immensely for the same.

The Tata Nexon gets a long list of features including Traction control, Roll-Over Mitigation, Emergency Brake Assist, LED lighting, three-tone interiors, electric sunroof, digital instrument cluster, ABS with EBD, reverse parking assist, etc.

As aforementioned, Tata sells the Nexon in multiple variants. Until recently, the Tata Nexon was sold in 12 petrol variants and 8 diesel variants. Now though, Tata Motors has discontinued four diesel variants including the base diesel variant. This is because of comparatively lower demand for these particular variants.

This gives an obvious direction to the Tata Nexon for the future. The entire automobile industry is shifting towards a greener and cleaner future. Tata has done well in launching the Nexon EV. The Nexon EV is the best-selling electric car in the Indian market. It has managed to convert many petrol/diesel vehicle users.

Then the fact that four diesel variants of the Nexon get axed while all petrol variants sell in great numbers, tells a story in itself. Tata Motors has issued a clarification that diesel models of the Nexon will remain on sale. However, there will come a time when all diesel variants will be discontinued.

The price of petrol and diesel in India is a huge contributor to the decreasing sales numbers of diesel models. Petrol is priced at Rs 98.75 per litre in Bangalore while prices crossed Rs 100 per litre in a few other cities. It certainly isn't cheap by any means. However, diesel is not too far behind at Rs 91.67 per litre. This simply means, the extra up-front cost one has to pay for a diesel-powered car is simply not worth it anymore. Hence, we're seeing a sharp shift in preference towards petrol-powered cars.

While there is no official comment on it by Tata Motors, we do know that when demand for the diesel variants drops, the manufacturer will eventually drop the diesel powertrain altogether.

Thoughts On Tata Nexon Hitting The 2,00,000 Units Milestone

The Tata Nexon is one of the best SUVs on sale in the Indian market right now and buyers know this. Of the 2,00,000 units, the last 50,000 have been sold only in the last six months. A majority of these are petrol-powered.

Petrol-powered vehicles will continue to sell until everyone makes the switch to EVs. Unfortunately, diesel-powered vehicles might not be around to see everyone switching to EVs.
