The price of petrol and diesel in India is a huge contributor to the decreasing sales numbers of diesel models. Petrol is priced at Rs 98.75 per litre in Bangalore while prices crossed Rs 100 per litre in a few other cities. It certainly isn't cheap by any means. However, diesel is not too far behind at Rs 91.67 per litre. This simply means, the extra up-front cost one has to pay for a diesel-powered car is simply not worth it anymore. Hence, we're seeing a sharp shift in preference towards petrol-powered cars.

While there is no official comment on it by Tata Motors, we do know that when demand for the diesel variants drops, the manufacturer will eventually drop the diesel powertrain altogether.

The Tata Nexon is one of the best SUVs on sale in the Indian market right now and buyers know this. Of the 2,00,000 units, the last 50,000 have been sold only in the last six months. A majority of these are petrol-powered.

Petrol-powered vehicles will continue to sell until everyone makes the switch to EVs. Unfortunately, diesel-powered vehicles might not be around to see everyone switching to EVs.
