Tata Motors Launches Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited (TPEML)
Tata Motors launched its EV subsidiary, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited (TPEML) in India. While this decision from Tata Motors may seem odd, it is actually a brilliant move from the Indian company as more focus could be given to developing future-proof electric cars.
According to Tata Motors. Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited will take care of every aspect of the automotive business such as R&D, design, development, manufacturing, assembly, fabrication, sales, marketing, after-sales support, etc.
Tata Motors is currently the largest passenger electric vehicle manufacturer in India with a commanding 70 per cent market share in the country. In which a significant chunk of sales comes from Tata Nexon EV. Tata Motors says that the TPEML will also include the development of hybrid vehicles as well.
This business decision from Tata Motors is very vital for the company's electrification future as other companies like Hyundai, MG, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Mini, etc are also eyeing the electrified Indian automotive market.
Apart from the Nexon EV, Tata Motors also has the Tigor EV and the latter was recently updated with a much more advanced 350V Ziptron EV system.
Speaking about the updated Tigor EV, Tata Motors recently launched the Xpres-T EV in India and the EV is a commercial electric sedan based on the Tigor EV and is priced at Rs 9.54 lakh for the base variant, where 'Xpres' is the recently introduced electric sub-brand of the Indian automotive giant, Tata Motors.
Unlike the recently updated 2021 Tata Tigor EV, the Xpres-T EV is meant for commercial purposes and hence it cannot be registered as a private vehicle like the Tigor EV.
The Xpres-T EV comes with two choices for the battery pack, both of which are 37 and 17 per cent smaller in capacity at 16.5kWh and 21.5kWh respectively compared to the 26kWh battery pack in the updated Tigor EV.
Another difference between the 2021 Tata Tigor EV and Xpres-T EV comes in the powertrain. While Tata Motors has opted to utilise the much more advanced 350V Ziptron EV system, the Xpres-T-EV continues to use the 72V electrical architecture.
This difference further trickles down to the electric motor, where the Xpres-T EV uses a 70V, 3-Phase induction motor with 39.4 bhp and 105Nm of peak torque as opposed to the 2021 Tata Tigor EV's 74 bhp and 170Nm electric motor.
This difference in powertrain and battery capacity has affected the charging time as well as the range of the Xpres-T EV. While the Tigor EV can charge from 0-80 per cent in just 65 minutes using DC fast chargers, the same feat takes 90 for the 16.5kWh Xpres-T EV and 110 minutes for the 21.5kWh Xpres-T EV.
For the range, the Xpres-T EV can do 165kms when equipped with a 16.5kWh battery pack, whereas the larger 21.5kWh battery pack can extend the claimed range to 213kms. Though this is somewhat lower compared to the 2021 Tata Tigor EV's ARAI-certified 306kms, it more than meets the requirements of fleet operators.
Safety features on Xpres-T EV include two airbags, ABS with EBD and a few more. The top-of-the-line Xpres-T EV with 21.5kWh battery and XZ+ trim level costs 10.64 lakh (ex-showroom).
Thoughts About TPEML
Tata now being the largest player in the Indian personal EV sector with an unparalleled 70 per cent market share, the decision to create a separate subsidiary brand creates focus to the electrified product portfolio of Tata Motors.
This can positively impact the electric vehicle business for Tata Motors in India.
