Renault-Nissan Shuts Down Production At Oragadam Plant Temporarily Due To COVID-19
Renault-Nissan has decided to temporarily halt all operations at its Oragadam plant due to the large number of COVID-19 infections in the state. This comes after a prolonged tussle with labour unions who demanded for work to be stopped at the company's factory. For now, the production has been stopped until 30 May.
The second wave of COVID-19 is creating chaos across the country. Most of the states in India have enforced lockdowns and curfews and this is expected to help curb the spread of the virus. Unlike the nation-wide lockdown of 2020, the new lockdown allows for factories and industries to work with safety protocols in place.
At a time when thousands of people are dying in the country due to infections, this is not sitting too well with the workforce who are afraid of contracting the virus. Renault Nissan Thozhilalargal Sangam, the labour union for Renault Nissan have been asking for the factory to be closed temporarily.
Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd seems to have finally heard their cries. The company has now announced a temporary shutdown of its operations at the Oragadam plant on the outskirts of Chennai.
An internal letter shared by MD and CEO Biju Balendran said, "The COVID-19 situation in and around Chennai remains extremely serious. Therefore, to ensure we maintain the focus on the safety of our employees and their families and as a precaution, the decision has been taken to suspend plant operations temporarily from May 26 to May 30."
It further said, "We will continue to closely monitor the situation in Chennai and Tamil Nadu and come back to you shortly with information on when the plant will restart operations." So even though the company has stated that it is shutting down until May 30, at this moment, it looks like the reopening date is uncertain.
The Renault-Nissan factory in Oragadam employs over 5,000 people and these workers are not willing to work during this pandemic. The state of Tamil Nadu reported 34,285 new COVID-19 cases and over 468 deaths due to COVID-19 on Tuesday, 25 May.
Thoughts On Renault-Nissan Shutting Down Production At Oragadam Plant Temporarily
The situation is grim, to say the least. Sales figures are seeing a massive drop once again, and the manufacturers are doing everything possible to keep production and sales going strong. However, the risk of contracting the virus is proving to be too big a threat. Hence, the manufacturers are now being forced to shut down production temporarily.
