German carmaker Porsche is all set to launch its first-ever electric car, the Taycan, in India. On arrival, the Taycan will be the most powerful electric car to be ever sold in India.

The Porsche Taycan was first revealed to the world over two years ago. Porsche states that the word 'Taycan' in Turkish can be roughly translated as 'lively young horse', an obvious reference to the stallion on the carmaker's crest which has featured a leaping horse since 1952.

The Porsche Taycan is available in four different variant options — Taycan, Taycan 4S, Taycan Turbo, and the Taycan Turbo S. The Taycan is also available in an estate guise called the Taycan Cross Turismo. However, Porsche is not expected to reveal the Cross Turismo at the event scheduled for the 12th of November.

The base Taycan only sends power to the rear wheels from a single electric motor that cranks out 402bhp and 344Nm of torque (469bhp and 357Nm of torque for the performance battery plus version). The base Taycan (79kWh) has a range of up to 431 km with the performance battery plus version (93kWh) upping that figure to 484 kilometres as per the WLTP tests

The rest of the Porsche Taycan lineup features all-wheel drive and dual motors. The Taycan 4S with 79kWh battery pack produces 523bhp and 640Nm of torque. The Taycan 4S with the 93kWh performance battery plus package increases the output to 563bhp and 650Nm of torque. The range of the Taycan 4S varies from 408(79kWh battery) to 464(93kWh battery) kilometres.

Both the Turbo and Turbo S (names that caused Porsche enthusiasts to go steaming mad) use the 93kWh battery pack. The Taycan Turbo produces 671bhp and 850Nm of torque propelling the EV from 0-100km/h in just 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 260km/h. The Taycan Turbo's range is 341 kilometres.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S cranks the motors all the way up to 11, with the dual powerplants combining to produce 751bhp and 1,050Nm of torque. This extra power slingshots the Taycan Turbo S from 0-100km/h in just 2.8 seconds. The top speed is the same as the Turbo's at 260km/h. The Taycan Turbo S can go up to 323 kilometres before it needs to plug into the mains. All variants of the Taycan use a 2-speed gearbox.

Porsche developed an 800-volt electrical charging system specifically for the Taycan and this four-door electric supercar supports DC fast charging of up to 270kW. Plug the Porsche Taycan into a charger that supports those speeds and you can refill their battery packs from 5 to 80 per cent in 22.5 minutes. The Taycan also supports 11kW three-phase AC charging and 9.6kW single-phase AC charging.

The Porsche Taycan measures 4,963mm long, 1,966mm wide and 1,381mm tall. The kerb weight of the first-ever electric Porsche varies between 2,140 and 2,305 kilogrammes depending on the variant.

The Porsche Taycan was first previewed at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show as the Mission E concept car. The production-spec Taycan arrived four years later at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show and retained most of the Mission E's good looks though it drop the concept's rather cool suicide doors.

The Taycan is Porsche's take on a performance EV and it has proved to be a hit with the automotive community across the world. With the Taycan coming to India on the 12th of November, we are quite looking forward to seeing it sprint on our streets, hopefully with a Tesla following in its footsteps in the near future.
