Nissan To Launch 15 New Electric Vehicles By 2030
Japanese carmaker Nissan has announced plans to launch 15 new electric vehicles by the year 2030. The new push towards electrification is part of the company's Nissan Ambition 2030 program.
The company plans to launch EVs with its proprietary solid state batteries by 2028. To facilitate this Nissan will set up a pilot plant in the Japanese city of Yokohama by the fiscal year 2024.
Speaking about his company's new Ambition 2030 program, Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida stated: "The role of companies to address societal needs is increasingly heightened. With Nissan Ambition 2030, we will drive the new age of electrification, advance technologies to reduce carbon footprint and pursue new business opportunities. We want to transform Nissan to become a sustainable company that is truly needed by customers and society."
Nissan was one of the first companies to bring in a mass market electric vehicle to the world when it launched the Leaf hatchback in 2010. For many years, the Nissan Leaf world's all-time top selling plug-in electric car before it was surpassed by the Tesla Model 3 in 2020.
Nissan's Ambition 2030 program will see the company release a total of 23 electrified vehicles include 15 fully electric cars by the year 2030. By the same year, Nissan aims for electric cars to account for 50 per cent of its global vehicles. Nissan has also set a 2050 deadline to go fully carbon neutral across the life cycle of its products.
Speaking about the plans, Nissan COO Ashwani Gupta stated, "We are proud of our long track record of innovation, and of our role in delivering the EV revolution. With our new ambition, we continue to take the lead in accelerating the natural shift to EVs by creating customer pull through an attractive proposition by driving excitement, enabling adoption and creating a cleaner world."
To accelerate the EV plans outlined by its Ambition 2030 program, Nissan plans to invest 2 trillion yen ($17.6 billion) over the next 5 years. Nissan plans to invest 20 billion yen ($1.76 billion) by 2026 towards charging infrastructure.
Nissan has also announced plans to increase its global battery production capacity. Working with its partners, Nissan will increase its battery production to 52GWh by 2026 and 130GWh by 2030.
Nissan's new EVs from the year 2028 onwards will come equipped with the company's proprietary solid state batteries. Nissan expects its solid state batteries to bring down the price of battery packs to $75 per kWh by the fiscal year 2028 and aims to bring it further down to $65 per kWh to achieve cost parity between EV and fossil fuel powered vehicles in the future. The company also intends to expand its battery refurbishing facilities beyond Japan with new locations in Europe during 2022 and in the U.S. by the fiscal year 2025.
Thoughts On The Nissan Ambition 2030 Program
Nissan's Ambition 2030 program will see the company accelerate its electrification development program exponentially with 15 new fully electric vehicles set to arrive by 2030. Nissan's plans show just how quickly the auto industry is switching towards EVs and its plans should hopefully bring down the cost of electric vehicles significantly in the future.
