However, unlike the Maruti Suzuki WagonR based Toyota hatchback that had been spied a few months back, the design of the test vehicle that has been spotted now looks far more conventional and looks evolutionary to the current-generation Maruti Suzuki WagonR.

Starting with the front-end and the test vehicle carries on with the tradition of large single-pod headlamps, but the slightly squashed grille on the current-generation Maruti Suzuki WagonR has been replaced by a larger chrome grille reminiscent of the one found on the previous-generation WagonR.

Completing the new front fascia is the more aggressive-looking front bumper with larger air intakes.

Moving on to the sides, the side profile takes us back to the 'blue-eyed boy' WagonR with slimmer C-pillars compared to the current-generation WagonR. Apart from this, the side of the test vehicle featured the Continental logo.

This presence of 'Continental' logo also gives rise to the speculation that the Japanese manufacturer might have partnered with Continental brand to improve certain aspects of their cars.

Keeping the speculation aside and moving to the rear portion of the test vehicle, it becomes very clear that the test vehicle is based on the previous-generation Maruti Suzuki WagonR and not the current-generation Maruti Suzuki WagonR.

The fact that becomes clear with the presence of clear tail-lamps that has been borrowed from the Fifth-generation WagonR Stingray.

The current generation of Maruti Suzuki WagonR is based on the HEARTECT platform and hence distanced itself from the Japanese version of WagonR.

This meant that the WagonR available in India was not only larger but more powerful as well. This is because the Japanese WagonR adhered to strict 'Kei' car regulations in Japan.

If Maruti Suzuki intends to launch this as updated WagonR, it will bring the production aligned with the international market, significantly reducing the input cost for the company.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR is one of India's most successful nameplates. The Japanese car manufacturer started the sales of WagonR in 1999 and has spawned three different generations till now for the Indian market.

The second-generation Maruti-Suzuki WagonR was introduced in 2010 and continued in production till 2019. During this time Maruti Suzuki kept the momentum up by introducing new updates at regular intervals.

The Third-generation Maruti Suzuki WagonR was a substantial upgrade since it was no longer based on the Kei WagonR sold in Japan and was completely new and developed on Suzuki's proprietary HEARTECT platform.

This allowed Maruti Suzuki to significantly improve the interior space and strength of the chassis without adding additional weight. In fact, the WagonR based on the HEARTECT platform was lighter than its predecessor.

At present, the WagonR comes with two choices of engines, a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine with 66 bhp and 90Nm of torque and a more powerful 1.2-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with 81 bhp and 113Nm of torque.

Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard but an AMT gearbox can be had as an option. Pricing for the Maruti Suzuki WagonR starts from Rs 4.98 lakhs.

Thoughts About Maruti Suzuki WagonR

Maruti Suzuki WagonR is one of the best selling hatchbacks in the country. Though not a record-breaker, the contribution of WagonR to the brand to become India's largest car manufacturer is not small.

The Maruti Suzuki WagonR has been the Japanese brand's consistent seller even when the market is down and helped the brand maintain the market share even during tough times.

Speaking about the WagonR, it does everything for a small family without any fuss and comes with roomy interiors, a peppy engine and Maruti Suzuki's famed service network.
