Mini Electric Cooper SE Sells Out — Only 30 Units For India
British carmaker Mini had opened pre bookings for the electric Cooper SE model in India last week. All 30 units meant for India were booked out in just two hours time, showing the level of interest for the all-electric Mini Cooper in India.
The british automaker still has not revealed the price tag or the launch date for the Mini Electric in India, though it was charging customers Rs 1 lakh to pre-book the Mini Electric.
The Mini Electric is the first ever production electric vehicle from the British automotive icon, which is owned by German carmaker BMW. The British brand had earlier experimented with electric cars in the form of the Mini E in 2009. The Mini E was regular Mini Cooper that had its petrol powertrain replaced with a fully electric one. The Mini E was a part of of the BMW's experiments at that time into electric propulsion which eventually led to the production spec i3 electric car from the German brand.
The current Mini Electric was first revealed in cncept guise at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The production ready Mini Electric was revealed two years later in 2019, once again at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
The all-new Mini Electric (also known as the Mini Cooper SE) is powered by a 32.6kWh lithium ion battery pack that is arranged in a T shape between the front seats and underneath the rear seats of the electric car. Out of the 32.6kWh only 28.9kWh is usable. The battery takes just half an hour to go from zero to 80 per cent full when connected to a 50kW DC fast charger. Connecting the battery to the mains with the onboard 11kW AC charger means charging the car fully takes a total of three and a half hours.
The battery pack of the Mini Electric delivers power to a single asynchronous electric motor that sends power to the front wheels via a single speed automatic gearbox. The motors cranks out 181bhp and 270Nm of torque. The Mini Electric can sprint from 0-100km/h in just 7.3 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 150km/h. The Mini electric has a range of 235 kilometres as per Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) testing standards.
The all-new Mini Electric is offered in four colour options — White Silver, Midnight Black, Moonwalk Grey and British Racing Green. The car comes packed with a host of features including 17-inch alloy wheels, and a multi-tone roof that allows for three colours to be painted onto the top of the electric hatchback. Other options for the electric Mini include a 5.5-inch digital driver's display along with a large 8.8-inch circular touchscreen display for the infotainment system and a wireless charge to charge your smartphones.
Thoughts On The Mini Electric
The Mini ELectric is the British brand's first formal tryst with electric propulsion. However, we are quite dissapointed that Mini chose to bring only 30 of these cars to India as with the proper price tag and the increasing demand for electric cars, they ccould have easily sold a whole lot more.
