Mercedes-Benz has finally taken the wraps off its Tesla Model S rival, the EQS and it is the EV equivalent of the S-Class. The EQS has been one of the most-awaited models in the electric vehicle market as it heralds the arrival of major premium car manufacturers in the high-end EV segment.
The Mercedes-Benz EQS is the brand's first vehicle to use Mercedes-Benz's Electric Vehicle Architecture, a bespoke platform for EVs from Mercedes-Benz. This new bespoke platform will also underpin future EVs from Mercedes-Benz like the EQE, EQE SUV, and EQS SUV.
The new Mercedes-Benz EQS will be manufactured alongside the S-Class in Sindelfingen, Germany. From the exterior, the new EQS remains largely similar to the EQS vision concept unveiled in 2019.
The two angular headlights are quite striking to look at and are joined by a thin strip of the lighting element. The tail lamps also mimic similar styling but can be ordered with an optional three-dimensional star pattern.
The cab-forward design with liftback-style boot from the EQS vision concept has also been carried over, which is quite unconventional for a luxury sedan; Especially, when one considers the fact that the EQS in question is the S-Class's electric equivalent.
Unlike a few electric cars, there is no front boot under the clamshell bonnet and the bonnet can only be opened during the scheduled services. Cleverly, Mercedes-Benz has added a separate tray on the front left-hand side that swivels its way out to add washer fluid to clean the windscreen. German engineering at its best!
Coming on to the sides, the doors have very premium-looking pop-out door handles and frameless windows. The new EQS measures 5,216mm long and 1,512mm tall. However, it doesn't look its size in the pictures, thanks to the combination of the long wheelbase (which happens to be longer than the latest S-Class at 3,210mm) and large 22-inch alloy wheels.
Despite its large dimensions, the drag coefficient is just 0.20 and the turning circle will also be remarkably short due to a unique rear-wheel steering system that can turn the rear-wheels up to 10-degrees in the opposite direction to front wheels.
The new Mercedes-Benz EQS is also packed with clever features, one of which will detect the driver and open the door without the door-handle even being touched. After the driver climbs in and places a foot on the brake, the door will automatically close.
That's not all, the moment you are inside you will see a trio of large screens which is unlike any other cars in the market. The three screens are integrated neatly into a single-piece of curved glass that runs across the dashboard.
There is also a tall centre console with two separate storages, each carrying its own set of USB ports and wireless charging pads. The liftback-styled boot may not have helped EQS in the looks department but has 60 more litres of storage space than the S-Class sedan, which only has 550-litres. The storage space can further be extended to 1,779-litres by folding the rear seats flat.
Under the floor is a 108kWh battery for both the EQS 450 and EQS 580 variants. The EQS 450 variant houses a single asynchronous motor capable of sending 334bhp and 458Nm to the rear wheels. The luxury EV accelerates from 0-100kph in just 6.2seconds despite weighing 2480kgs.
The more potent EQS 580 model can sprint from 0-100kph in just 4.3seconds, courtesy of 523bhp and 856Nm. The EQS 580 is also heavier than the EQS 450 by almost 105kgs, thanks to two electric motors placed on each axle.
The claimed range for the Mercedes-Benz EQS is 770km, rated under the WLTP test cycle and both variants are limited to a top speed of 210kph. There are also talks about an AMG variant using the same powertrain as EQC 580 but with a power output of more than 700bhp. The new EQS will arrive in India by the first half of 2022 and will be priced slightly above the S-Class sedan.
Thoughts On The New Mercedes-Benz EQS Being Revealed
The new Mercedes EQS may seem like a large A-class-based electric sedan in the images, but it takes the luxury quotient to a new level. The sedan will soon set new benchmarks for upcoming electric sedans in terms of luxury and comfort.
