Maruti Suzuki 1.5-Litre Diesel Engine Is All Set To Make Its Comeback: Expected Launch In Two Models
Maruti Suzuki will be relaunching its 1.5-litre DDiS engine in its BS6-compliant avatar in the Indian market. After the company took a backstep on offering diesel engines in the BS6 era, it has realigned its strategy due to the ongoing demand in the market.
According to the latest report front TeamBHP, the 1.5-litre DDiS BS6-compliant engine is almost ready to make its comeback. Maruti Suzuki is expected to relaunch the engine on its Ciaz sedan and the Ertiga MPV.
The 1.5-litre engine that powered a host of models during the BS4 emission standards. This includes the Ciaz, the Ertiga and the Vitara Brezza. The 1.5-litre diesel engine produced a maximum of 94bhp and a peak torque of 225Nm mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.
Earlier, the company was speculated to re-introduce the 1.6-litre diesel engine that did its duties on the S-Cross crossover. The 1.6-litre engine, in its BS-IV avatar, churned out 118bhp and 320Nm of torque.
The reports also suggest that after the BS6 diesel engine makes its debut in the sedan and the MPV, it will soon join the brand's compact-SUV, the Vitara Brezza's line-up. However, the company will be introducing the engine on the next-gen model of the SUV. The upcoming engine will also be a part of the new crossover codenamed D22 from the Toyota-Maruti Suzuki joint venture.
The company decided to end production of the diesel engine model for the BS6 era. This is because the market predicted that the demand for diesel engines will reduce due to the new emission norms and increased manufacturing costs to make it BS6-complaint.
However, much to everyone's surprise, the demand for diesel engines are still as strong as ever. Brand's like Kia and Hyundai currently offers diesel power units on most of its model range sold in the country. This includes some of the important models such as the Seltos, the Creta, the Venue and the Verna.
As a result, Maruti Suzuki being Indian's largest automaker is missing out on major sales number by not offering a diesel powertrain in the segment. The company have decided to re-capture its popular diesel market share by introducing the BS6 compliant models in the country.
As is, the Ertiga and the Ciaz are powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine with the Suzuki's 'SHVS' mild-hybrid technology. The engine produces 104bhp and 138Nm of torque and comes mated to a standard five-speed manual gearbox. The company will offer an optional four-speed torque-converter as well.

With the introduction of a diesel engine option, customers seeking to purchase a Maruti Suzuki models can choose from possibly four different powertrain options. This will help the brand to widen its range targeting more buyers in the market. It will also help to compete against its market rivals in the country.
