Mahindra Trademarks XUV100, XUV400, XUV700 & XUV900 Names For Future SUVs

Mahindra has trademarked the XUV100, XUV400, XUV700, and XUV900, which hints at upcoming SUVs from Mahindra. Or, it could be Mahindra trying to change names of SUVs it currently produces. No other details are available at this point in time. The brand has produced some brilliant SUVs with the XUV moniker until now. Now we know there are more XUVs coming our way.

Even though it is not uncommon to see companies trademarking several similar names to prevent rivals from using similar names, we suspect this move could be a part of bringing a new structure within Mahindra for its product portfolio.

From the leaked trademarks document, we can see that Mahindra has trademarked the XUV100, XUV400, XUV700 and XUV900 names. The trademarks XUV100 and XUV900 could be used to rename the KUV100 and Alturas G4 respectively.

Mahindra recently released a teaser video for its upcoming SUV which will be named XUV 700. It will sit above the XUV500 and below the Alturas G4 in Mahindra's product lineup. It will be developed from the ground-up at Mahindra's facilities in India, America and Italy. No other details of the upcoming SUV are available at the moment.

The current-generation XUV500 will continue on-sale along with the upcoming XUV700, but it will be sold as a 5-seater alone. This makes us believe that the XUV700 could be a 7-seater. Mahindra has also trademarked the XUV400 moniker. Now, this could either be the next-gen Scorpio or could be another SUV that slots in just below the next-gen Scorpio.

The 'XUV' moniker has done good to Mahindra in the Indian market as well as international markets. Mahindra's sub-4-meter SUV based on the SsangYong Tivoli also became a successful product, after it was positioned and marketed as 'XUV300'. This itself would be a strong case to promote Mahindra to add a proper structure to their nomenclature and bring in several XUVs.

Thoughts On Mahindra Filing Trademarks For The XUV100, XUV400 & XUV900 Names

If Mahindra decides to go with this new nomenclature, it will be nice to see an Indian manufacturer following the trend set by premium brands such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes etc. The new nomenclature could unify the product portfolio and also improve the brand image substantially.

However, we do believe that with a standardized nomenclature Mahindra is trying to focus on products for international markets which could potentially improve the brand image within our country, and we know that Mahindra is more than capable of producing vehicles that could take the fight to the best brands.
