India-bound Hyundai Ioniq 5 Gets EPA Certified Range Of 488km
South Korean carmaker Hyundai's Ioniq 5 electric SUV has received a maximum range rating of 487.6 kilometres (303 miles) from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) after undergoing tests with the American emissions testing agency. The new rating from the EPA is slightly higher than what the Hyundai Ioniq 5 achieved on the WLTP tests in Europe where it was certified for a maximum range of 481 kilometres.
Hyundai released a statement about the new EPA rated range of the Ioniq 5 stating, "When equipped with a single motor (2WD), IONIQ 5's maximum EPA estimated driving range on a single charge is 303 miles. The maximum EPA estimated range of the dual motor all-wheel drive models is 256 miles."
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is currently Hyundai's flagship electric vehicle and is expected to arrive in India as part of the South Korean carmaker's plans to bring six new EVs into the Indian market by 2028. While some of these six electric vehicles are expected to be electric versions of current cars, the others will be based on Hyundai's E-GMP platform which underpins the Ioniq 5.
Despite its retro hatchback looks, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is quite a large vehicle. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is 4,635mm long, 1,890mm wide and 1,605mm tall. The Ioniq 5's wheelbase is 3,000mm long and the electric vehicle weighs anywhere between 1,840 kilos to 2,115 kilogrammes depending on the battery and motor configuration.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is offered with two battery options - 58.3 kWh and 72.6kWh (the US version gets a slightly larger 77.4kWh battery). The larger battery pack version of the Ioniq 5 is the SUV tested by the EPA in both RWD and AWD guises.
In all-wheel drive guise, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 draws power from two electric motors that produce a combined output of 302bhp (320bhp for US versions) and 605Nm of peak torque. This allows the all-wheel drive version of the Ioniq 5 to sprint from 0-100km/h in around 5.2 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 185km/h.
The rear-wheel drive version of the larger capacity Hyundai Ioniq 5 is powered by a single motor that drives the rear wheels. The RWD Ioniq 5 produces 208bhp (225bhp for US models) and 350Nm of peak torque. This allows for a 0-100km/h sprint time of 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 185km/h.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is based on the South Korean carmaker's E-GMP platform. This platform supports both 400-volt and 800-volt charging infrastructures. This means that when the Ioniq 5 is connected to a 350kW rapid charger, the massive crossover can charge its 72.6kWh battery pack from 10-80 per cent in just 18 minutes. Hyundai claims that a five minute charge can add 100 kilometres to the range of the Ioniq 5. The standard 10.9 kW on-board charger completes a full charge of the battery pack in 6 hours and 43 minutes using Level 2 charging.
Thoughts On the Hyundai Ioniq 5
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of the best looking electric vehicles on sale today. With its massive range now certified, we can't wait for Hyundai to bring the Ioniq 5 to India, which if some reports are to believed could be as early as mid-2022.
