Here Is An Interesting Comparison: MG Hector Vs Mahindra XUV700
MG Hector and Mahindra XUV700 are two of the best SUVs you can currently buy in India, and since they are priced very similarly, it becomes even more difficult to choose between each other.
To make matters even more complicated, both these SUVs take completely different approaches to execute similar purposes.
When MG Motor launched the MG Hector in India, the brand in a way revolutionised the automotive industry with a long list of smart features that rivalled the latest mobile phones. Being the newer SUV here, the new Mahindra XUV700 is also packed to the brim with features like the MG Hector.
In this comparison, we will compare these SUVs in five different parameters - Design, Features, Safety, Powertrain, and Price
1. Design
Like I always say, design is clearly subjective. However, being the newer vehicle, the new Mahindra XUV700 looks more modern and fresh. This sense of sophistication is further accentuated by the use of flush door handles that also add a touch of premium-ness.
The MG Hector on the other hand looks sophisticated but not as much as the new Mahindra XUV700. However, the 6/7-seater variant of the MG Hector carries a slightly different design to the 5-seater MG Hector and it also looks just as premium and sophisticated as the new Mahindra XUV700.
2. Features
Speaking about features, both these SUVs are renowned for the number of standard features on offer.
Both these SUVs come with features such as a 360-degree surround-view camera, large infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, powered ORVM
powered seats, steering mounted audio controls, premium music system, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, cooled glove box, panoramic sunroof, LED headlights and many more.
Despite being an older SUV, the MG Hector holds its ground pretty firmly by offering similar equipment levels.
3. Safety Features
Both these SUVs come packed with all the latest safety features such as airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, TC, TPMS and many more, but it is the Mahindra XUV700 that edges ahead slightly.
Being the newer SUV here, Mahindra has clearly taken its sweet time to develop the Mahindra XUV700 and it clearly has an edge over the MG Hector in this department with the inclusion of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
The ADAS includes features such as adaptive cruise control, smart pilot assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and traffic sign recognition.
4. Powertrain
The MG Hector comes with 3 different engine options. The diesel engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit with 167.75bhp at 3,750 rpm and 350 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm. This engine comes solely mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.
The 1.5-litre petrol engine produces a healthy 141.04 bhp at 5,000 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 1,600 rpm. Unlike the diesel unit, this engine can be specified with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed DCT or a CVT gearbox.
Finally, the MG Hector also comes with a hybrid powertrain. This powertrain uses an identical setup as the previous powertrain but the starter motor is replaced by a belt-type starter generator to enable start/stop function and comes with a 6-speed manual transmission as the sole gearbox option.
The Mahindra XUV700 on the other hand comes with a choice of one petrol engine and two diesel engines and gearbox options include a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The petrol engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 197 bhp. Both the diesel engines are 2.2-litre turbocharged units, however, the more powerful version pumps out 182 bhp, whereas the less powerful version puts out a respectable 153 bhp.
Since Mahindra XUV700 gets an automatic gearbox in the diesel variant, customers have better flexibility in opting for Mahindra XUV700. Moreover, Mahindra XUV700 also comes with an optional all-wheel-drive layout.
5. Price
Prices for the MG Hector start from Rs 13.49 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the base petrol variant with the manual transmission, whereas the prices for the base diesel variant starts from Rs 14.98 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
Mahindra has clearly nailed the pricing department, the prices for the base variant of the Mahindra XUV700 equipped with petrol engine and
manual transmission starts from almost a lakh cheaper at Rs 12.49 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
Whereas the prices for the diesel variant starts from Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India), which is almost Rs 2 lakh cheaper than the base MG Hector equipped with the diesel engine.
Thoughts About MG Hector and Mahindra XUV700
If price is not a deciding factor, both the SUVs stand toe-to-toe with each other as both SUVs offer similar equipment levels.
However, with the aggressive pricing and inclusion of ADAS in top variants, Mahindra edges ahead of the MG Hector.
