F1 Kicks-Off New Sprint Race Format This Season: New Race Weekend Format Introduced In 2021
Formula 1 is all set to introduce a new format of racing. For the first time ever, F1 will host a sprint race format. This format is expected to engage the viewers throughout the weekend and not just during the main race. Of the 23 Grands Prix scheduled to take place this year, three race weekends will follow the new sprint race format.
For more than seven decades now, Formula 1 has given us motorsport enthusiasts something to look forward to, on the weekends. What started out as some rich young men racing on weekends is now the world's most expensive sport and is now known as the pinnacle of four-wheeled motorsport.
Billions of people watch F1 and the sport has never ceased to entertain the fans. Sometimes, it is the wheel-to-wheel action, sometimes it is driver or team rivalry and other times, it is the sheer speed of the sport that keeps us entertained.
Organisers of F1 have over the decades found newer ways to keep the audience engaged and one such new method will be implemented this season.
F1 race weekends used to follow a particular format until now. On Friday, there would be two practice sessions. Saturday would have one practice session followed by a qualifying session. Sunday would have the main race. This standard has been followed by GP races for several decades now.
This year though, organisers are bringing in a new format. In the new format, there will be one practice session on Friday followed by a qualifying session for the sprint race set to take place on Saturday. On Saturday, there will be a practice session in the morning. In the afternoon, there will be a 100-kilometre sprint race.
The starting order for the 100-kilometre sprint race will be decided by the qualifying session held on Saturday. The Sprint race will cover a distance of 100 kilometres and the finishing order will decide the starting order of the main race on Sunday. In order to make it more interesting, the top finishers of the sprint race will score championship points as well. The main race will take place on Sunday as usual.
The 2021 Formula 1 season will have three such sprint format race weekends. The first two haven't been confirmed yet, but are rumoured to be Silverstone and Monza.
The Formula 1 season this year is quite interesting indeed. After just two races this season, Lewis Hamilton is at the top of the standings with 44 points followed closely by Max Verstappen with 43 points. The top-three are completed by Lando Norris with 27 points.
Mercedes-AMG is at the top of the constructors championship with 60 points, followed by Red Bull Racing Honda with 53 points and McLaren Mercedes with 41 points. With the sprint races come more opportunities to score points.
Thoughts On 2021 Formula 1 Introducing Sprint Race Weekend Format
F1 has always been an interesting sport. Now, the sprint race weekends are set to increase the fun-quotient. There are more opportunities to score points and they also make for more overtaking action. We're certainly looking forward to the action. Stay tuned for updates.
