Dual Airbags Mandatory Deadline Extended To December 31 By MoRTH: Here Are More Details
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) extends the deadline for the mandatory use of dual airbags in cars to December 31, 2021. According to the safety rule, all cars registered in India must have a driver and a co-passenger airbag starting next year.
The deadline for the upcoming safety rule was initially set for April 1, 2021. However, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the government has extended the deadline in the country.
The decision was made after the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) approached the government seeking more time for implementation of the upcoming safety rule due to the ongoing pandemic.
The current rule for the airbag in cars mandates only for the driver-side installation. However, the upcoming rule will ensure the safety of both occupants in the front from a head-on impact.
The upcoming safety rule of mandatory dual front airbags in cars was recommended by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety. The notification from the MoRTH adds that the airbags need to meet the AIS 145 standard under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications.
New Tyre Rating System
Apart from the airbags, MoRTH has also proposed the implementation of the tyre rating system. The new star rating system will include several tyre performance indicators. This includes Rolling Resistance, Wet Grip and Tyre Noise level.
These ratings are in line with international rating systems that are followed in Europe and Middle East markets.
The new norms will have to be followed by tyre manufacturers for all formats of tyres two-wheelers, cars, buses, and heavy vehicles. Companies importing tyres will also have to comply with the norms as well.
A draft released by the MoRTH proposes the new tyre norms to be applicable from October this year. Meanwhile, existing tyre models will need to follow the rating and scoring system from October 2022.
Thoughts About The Dual Airbags Mandatory Deadline Extended To December 31
The upcoming rule for dual airbags will enhance the safety of occupants, especially in a head-on collision. However, the new rule could also make the entry-level cars a little more expensive starting next year. We think that a little increase in cost in exchange for life-saving equipment is a good bargain.
