Car Sales Report October 2021 — Nissan The Big Surprise As Maruti Suzuki Continues Dominance

Car sales in India continue to rally as carmakers continue recovering from the chip shortage and the pandemic. Compared to September 2021 (nearly 1.86 lakh units), the Indian car market grew by 40.1 per cent with carmakers selling over 2.6 lakh units in the month of October.

However, year over year comparisons shows that the car market contracted by 22.1 per cent with sales in October 2021 dropping by 73,592 to 2,60,067 units. Over the same month in 2020, carmakers had sold 3,33,659 units in the Indian market.

Maruti Suzuki continues to be the leader of the Indian car market with a market share of 41.9 per cent. Maruti Suzuki sold 1,08,991 units in the month of October 2021, a growth of 72.7 per cent over September's sales figures which stood at 63,111.

However, it is when we turn to October 2020, that the numbers look more troubling for Maruti. The largest carmaker lost 7.1 per cent of the market compared to October 2020, where it had a stranglehold with a commanding 49 per cent market share. Year over year sales are also down 33.4 per cent compared to this month last year in which the carmaker sold 1,63,656 units.

Hyundai continues its stranglehold on the 2nd spot in the Indian car market. Like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai's month over month figures sales increased significantly in October by a figure of 11.9 per cent to 37,021 units.

However, like its main rival, Hyundai too lost a significant chunk of the market share (2.7 per cent) as year over year sales dropped by 34.6 per cent (the worst amongst all carmakers in India except for Ford, which does not sell cars here anymore) compared to the 56,605 units the company sold in October 2020.

The final podium spot is held by Tata which has made provisions to increase its grip on the third position in the Indian market with the launch of the new Punch SUV. Tata's sales increased in both parameters with month over month sales up by 33.9 per cent to 33,926.

Year over year sales also showed positive growth increasing by 43.8 per cent compared to October 2020's sales number of 23,600. Tata's market share has also increased by 6 per cent compared to last year to 13 per cent.

Mahindra claimed the 4th spot in the sales battle of the Indian car market with the SUV focused old gun selling a total of 20,034 units in the month of October 2021. This figure is up by 9.4 per cent compared to the same period last year when Mahindra sold only 18,317 units, which has also helped Mahindra increase its market share by 2.2 per cent to 7.7 per cent when compared to October 2020.

Compared to the previous month, Mahindra's sales numbers have increased by 55.7 per cent as the carmaker had only sold 12,863 units in September 2020. The newly launched XUV700 contributed to 17 per cent of Mahindra's sales numbers in October.

The biggest success story and one that should be lauded is that of Nissan. With the launch of the Magnite SUV, Nissan's sales numbers have been rising steadily and compared to October last year, Nissan's year over sales increased by a whopping 254 per cent to 3,913 units. The carmaker had sold just 1,105 units in October 2020.

The Japanese carmaker's month over month sales figures are also up by 39 per cent from September's 2,816 units, showing the steady recovery of the Nissan brand in India.

Thoughts On Car Sales Numbers For October 2021

October's car sales numbers show that India's car market is slowly but surely recovering from the double-barreled blast of the pandemic and the current chip shortage. However, we still have a long way to go before we match 2020's numbers and that is still something to worry about.
