BYD is a Chinese automaker trying to infiltrate the Indian automobile segment with its value-for-money products. However due to recent tensions between the two emerging superpowers and restrictions related to Chinese imports, it seems like BYD has reworked its strategy for the Indian market with more focus on bringing electric vehicles to the Indian market.

BYD seems to want to conquer the commercial sector as the electric van being tested lacks second-row seating and the third-row glass windows. As per BYD, the T3 van will have a maximum range of 300kms on a single charge, and the batteries can be charged to their full capacity in just 90 minutes using a suitable DC charger.

BYD is likely to use the powertrain and a few other parts from the e6 in order to keep costs low once the brand starts production in India. Looks-wise, the BYD T3 looks boxy enough to be easily drawn on a piece of paper. However, compared to the other commercial vans on sale in the Indian market, it certainly has more curves.

Thoughts On BYD T3 Electric Cargo Van Being Spotted On Test In India

The cargo van segment is an untapped gold mine of sorts for BYD as most of the buyers in this segment are plagued with rising fuel costs. An EV in this segment will reduce their running cost and improve their profit margins.

It will also reduce maintenance charges as most EVs have very low maintenance cost compared to their conventionally powered siblings. If BYD prices the T3 right, they may have to homologate the T3 in the first year itself to meet the demand from the market.
