Instead of using big batteries under the floor to store energy, BMW uses a pair of tanks to hold up to 6-kgs of hydrogen and these tanks can withstand 700-bar pressure to keep the gas in. This not only ensures that the source of energy is clean but it also reduces the recharge/refuelling time compared to a conventional battery-powered car.

However, a battery is still used in the system. One of the reasons for this setup is that BMW's new fuel cell system can generate only up to 170bhp of power. By using a battery pack though, BMW can use a 374bhp electric motor for propulsion. This complicated system also enables the engineers at BMW to use brake regeneration technology to recover the energy lost during braking.
