German luxury carmaker BMW has unveiled the all-new Concept XM SUV at Art Basel's 2021 Miami Beach show. The BMW Concept XM previews a high-performance petrol-electric hybrid SUV that will go into production next year.
The all-new production-spec SUV which will retain the XM name will be an exclusive 'M' model. The new XM will be the first exclusive model from BMW's Motorsports (M) division since the M1 supercar from the late 1970s. The arrival of the production-spec XM will also coincide with the M division's 50th anniversary year.
The BMW Concept XM features a high-performance petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. This hybrid powertrain consists of a twin-turbo V8 engine along with a single electric motor that will produce a combined 739bhp and 1,000Nm of peak torque. The XM offers an electric-only range of up to 80 kilometres.
The production-spec version of the XM is expected to feature power and torque figures similar to the concept vehicle and is expected to use a version of BMW's 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 along with an electric motor.
Speaking at the unveiling of the Concept XM, Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH stated, "The BMW Concept XM represents a complete re-imagining of the high-performance car segment. It underlines the ability of BMW M GmbH to break with established conventions and push boundaries in order to offer fans of the brand the ultimate driving experience. The series-production car - the first pure BMW M model since the legendary BMW M1 — also shows how we are approaching the step-by-step electrification of our brand."
The BMW Concept XM features a distinct design that gives it a very unique look. The front end of the Concept XM is dominated by the massive kidney grilles which feature horizontal slats. The Concept XM features a split headlight design with triangular daytime running lights sitting above the actual headlights. The front bumper is an angry angular section that looks quite aggressive.
The sides are dominated by the large squared-off wheel arches that play host to massive 23-inch alloy wheels. The roofline of the SUV tapers to the rear and is quite low to the ground as well. The roof flows into the tailgate section of the concept SUV which looks quite small when compared to the rear bumper.
On either side of the rear windscreen are laser etched BMW logos which is a tribute to the BMW M1 supercar. The M1 sported BMW badges on either side of its engine cover. Other quirky styling cues include the sleek L-shaped taillights and the vertically stacked twin tailpipes for the exhaust that flank the sides of the diffuser section of the chunky rear bumper.
Inside, the XM is M Division's take on a driver-focused cockpit. The cabin is draped in brown leather while the carbon fibre dashboard features copper strands. On the dash sits a massive curved free-standing display that plays host to the driver's digital instrument binnacle and the infotainment display. The snazzy headliner also calls attention to itself and it also features ambient lighting that mimics the three colours of the BMW's M division.
Thoughts On the BMW Concept XM
The BMW Concept XM previews a massive SUV that will be exclusive to the Bavarian marque's M division. The new BMW XM will be one that gives Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne Turbo owners nightmares when it hits the roads in 2022.
