Indian motorists have several confusions with the traffic rules, especially with the percentage of window tint that is allowed in a four-wheeler. On the other hand, motorists are also confused whether the IND number plate has been made mandatory in the country.

Both these questions have been answered by Kamal Pant, Commissioner of Police, Bangalore City. In his recent online Q&A session on Twitter called #AskCPBlr, Mr Pant has cleared major confusion lurking around both these traffic rules to motorists in the City.

One of the questions asked by a motorist was "What is % Visibility Of Sun Film (On Cars) Allowed in Bengaluru?" to which the Commissioner of Police, Bangalore City responded saying "50% visibility is must for side glasses. If anyone demands a bribe, please communicate name/rank of the official, location and time of the incident by Whatsapp / SMS to 9480801000 or call 100."

After this particular tweet, there were a couple of follow up questions which were posted in the same post. This includes whether the rule is applicable for sun fils or the factory fitted UV proof tinted glass.

Although there has been no reply from the Commissioner of Police yet, we can confirm that the windscreen and the rear window of every motor vehicle need to allow 70 per cent visual transmission light. On the other hand, side windows are permitted to have films or tinted glass that allows 50 per cent visual transmission light.

The Supreme Court in April 2012 had prohibited the use of tinted glass or sun films on windshields and windows of vehicles that restricted vision beyond the permissible limits fixed under the Motor Vehicles Act 1989. The decision to ban the use of dark tint was made to eradicate illegal activities happening in four-wheelers across the country.

Moving to the second traffic rule confusion regarding the use of IND number plate among Bangalore and Indian Motorists across the country. A motorist in the city posted a tweet asking a question whether the IND number plate is mandated in the city. Mr Pant responded in with a tweet saying "IND is not mandatory, hence you won't be fined for that."

Motorists are not required to use an IND number plate for their vehicle in the city. As a result, they will not be fined for the same by traffic police. However, in case they are being fined for not using an IND plate, the motorist is asked to report the incident on WhatsApp for further action on the official.
