Volkswagen Discontinues DSG Units In Polo & Vento: Replaces Them With 6-Speed MT And AMT Units

The dual-clutch automatic transmission units were seen on the company's 1.5-litre TDI diesel, and 1.2-litre TSI petrol units, both of which have been discontinued ahead of the 1 April BS6 compliance deadline.

The 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine that was featured on the VW Polo and the VW Vento, has been replaced by a new 1.0-litre TSI unit that was just showcased at the Auto Expo 2020.

The all new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, direct-injection turbo charged petrol engine produces 113bhp of power and 200Nm of torque - 10bhp and 25Nm more than the outgoing engine.

The biggest change or upgrade made to the new 1.0-litre TSI engine is that is will now arrive with a six-speed manual, and a six-speed torque converter automatic for transmission options.

The company says that with diesel engines out of the question, it wants to increase interest and appeal of its petrol models by offering more affordable engine options.

The company believes that there is room for a TSI unit in the lower price segment and it can be achieved by offering a six-speed manual transmission. Also as part of their India 2.0 plans, Volkswagen wants to cater to a wider audience and they a ‘normal automatic transmission would work just fine.

While Volkswagen has not revealed the price of the new transmissions, expectations are that the new vehicles that feature it would be roughly Rs 1 lakh cheaper than the ones with the 1.2-litre TSI DSG models.

Volkswagen is also expected to mount the 1.0-litre TSI unit for base variants of the Taigun SUV. The vehicle will be available with about six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions at launch, which is expected during mid 2021.

Top end models however will continue to feature the 1.5-litre TSI unit that will arrive with with the seven-speed DSG transmission. The company believes that nothing beats that shift quality and the experience of a DSG.

Volkswagen's next-generation Vento that is scheduled to launch at least 18 months later will also arrive with the 1.5-litre TSI engine.

The company is confident that the 1.0 TSI unit is a fantastic replacement for its diesel engines over the long term. The torque and efficiency figures are outstanding, and VW expects that they will be well received by the markets.

Thoughts About Volkswagen Retiring The DQ200 Seven-Speed DSG Transmission Unit

At this point, competition is every where. Most segments in the Auto Industry have fierce competitors who are either new brands or very successful existing brands. Volkswagen was once king in the industry and will really have to fight its way to the top. Let's see if their decision of retiring the seven-speed DSG transmission unit bears fruit.
