India’s Top-Five Famous ‘Made-In-India’ Cars

Reva i: The Reva i was one of the first electric cars in the Indian market and was manufactured in India. It was sold both locally and in 26 other global markets as well. The company was later acquired by Mahindra and was on sale in India till 2011.

DC Avanti: The DC Avanti is the first home-grown sports car. It was a great initiative by 'DC' to build a sports car which was affordable to the masses, however, it failed quickly after the initial hype. The car was powered by a 2.0-litre engine, which produced 248bhp.

Hindustan Ambassador: The Hindustan Ambassador is probably one of the most iconic cars in the Indian market. Initially, based on the Oxford Morris, the 'Amby' was one of the first cars to be manufactured in the country. The Ambassador was first introduced in 1958 and has served everyone from the masses to even the Prime Minister.

Tata Indica: The Indica hatchback marked the entry of Tata Motors into the passenger vehicle segment in the Indian market. A company which till then was known to produce only commercial vehicles, brought in the Indica to rival the likes of the Maruti Zen.

The Tata Indica at one point even became the best-selling car in the country. The success of the Indica led Tata Motors to introduce various versions, including a sedan, estate and cabs. The Tata Indica was also re-badged by Rover and sold in international markets by the name CityRover.

Mahindra Scorpio: Similar to the Tata Indica, the Scorpio SUV from Mahindra marked the brand's entry into the passenger vehicle segment. The Mahindra Scorpio was also the first completely in-house developed vehicle and also marked 50 years of the brand's existence.

The Mahindra Scorpio first went on sale in 2002 and has remained one of the most popular SUVs in the Indian market till date. The company is also said to be introducing a new-generation iteration of the Scorpio in 2021.

Honourable Mentions

Tata Nano: The Tata Nano was the result of Ratan Tata's vision of introducing the 'World's cheapest car'. The vision with the Nano was that it would be an affordable replacement to two and three-wheelers in the Indian market.

While the tag of being the world's cheapest car helped the Nano gain initial hype, this soon faded out. There were several updates made to boost sales, however, the company ended up discontinuing the model recently.
