Tata Nexon EV Driving Range Expected To Increase Because Of Updates In Future

Speaking to Overdrive, Mr Anand Kulkarni, Vehicle Line Director at Tata Motors EV, stated that the company is expected to improve the Nexon EV range with future updates. The brand's Ziptron technology featured on the Nexon EV will be improved to offer better range, performance, and efficiency.

The Ziptron technology will also spawn more electric vehicles in the company's portfolio. This includes the upcoming Tata Altroz EV that was showcased at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, and the Tata HBX mini SUV. Though, the battery capacity, power output and range might be different as compared to the Nexon EV.

Tata Motors sells two electric cars in the Indian market, the Tigor EV and the Nexon EV. However, both models feature different technologies and architecture. The Tigor EV uses the brand's Electra powertrain that is a low-voltage electric-powertrain, while the Nexon EV has the advanced Ziptron technology that supports high-voltage architecture.

In technical terms, any powertrain producing under 60V is considered as a low-voltage architecture. Electric powertrains producing above 60V are considered as high-voltage architectures.

Coming back to the Tata Nexon EV, the electric compact-SUV retails at a starting price of Rs 13.99 lakh. While the top-spec variant retails at Rs 15.99 lakh. All prices mentioned are ex-showroom (India). The Nexon EV is offered in three trim levels as well.

Tata Motors launched the Nexon EV during February 2020. The Nexon EV became the cheapest-electric SUV in the Indian market at launch. Other electric-SUVs sold in India are the Hyundai Kona Electric and the MG ZS EV, both of which are priced much higher as compared to the Nexon EV.

The Tata Nexon features a 95kW electric motor, and comes paired to a 30.2kWh Lithium-ion battery pack. It produces 129bhp and 245Nm of peak torque with power going to the front wheels. The Nexon EV features a claimed driving range of 312km on a single charge. However, the real-world range is roughly between 250 and 300km.

The charge times via a home charger are rated between 7 and 8 hours for a complete charge, while the fast-charging technology charges the Nexon EV batteries from 0 - 80% in just 60 mins. The electric compact-SUV also features regenerative braking which charges the batteries while braking resulting in an increased driving range.

As is, the Nexon EV does not have a direct competitor, however it is about to receive stiff competition from the upcoming Mahindra eXUV300. The Mahindra electric SUV is expected to be launched during mid-2021, and is expected to feature a driving range of over 370 kilometres.

As per the industry, electric vehicles across the world receive regular updates to its technology which results in increased battery range and performance. Tesla and Hyundai are known to improve their cars by following this update method. With Tata Motors promising similar updates, we can confirm that the shift to electric mobility in India is heading in the right direction.
