Tata Motors is gearing to launch a couple of new models in the Indian market including a tall-riding hatchback. Called the 'Hornbill' and internally referred to as 'HBX' is expected to be launched sometime either in this year or early next year.
Ahead of its launch, the Hornbill has been spotted testing ahead several times across various parts of the country. The latest spy video from Motorbeam reveals a completely camouflaged test mule in its production-ready guise.
The video also reveals the Y-shaped LED tail-lamps, chunky looking alloy wheels and the split head-lamps setup of the upcoming micro-SUV. It will be built on the brand's ALFA architecture and the Impact 2.0 design, similar to the Altroz premium hatchback. The Hornbill will feature a tall-riding design, with a sleek looking grille inspired by the Harrier SUV.
Tata Motors had first showcased a concept form of the upcoming SUV at the 2018 Auto Expo. At the Auto Expo this year The company unveiled another rugged and off-road version of the HBX concept. It was also claimed that 90 per cent of the second concept of the HBX will be carried over to the production model.
On the inside, the upcoming hatchback-SUV is expected to borrow most of its features from the Altroz hatchback. This includes the large touchscreen infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with funky-looking dashboard design, dual-tone upholstery, ambient lighting, and the semi-digital instrument cluster. The SUVish stance will also make for more cabin space to easily seat five passengers in total.
The Hornbill is expected to feature the same petrol engine that currently powers the Altroz premium-hatchback. The 1.2-litre petrol engine produces 85bhp and 113Nm of torque, and comes mated to a manual transmission. The company is expected to offer the petrol engine with an optional AMT at a later date.
The HBX is expected to be placed below the Tata Altroz hatchback and could become the brand's new entry-level model. Once launched, the Tata HBX will rival the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, the Renault Kwid, and the 2020 Datsun Redi-GO in the Indian market.
