Tata Motors is gearing up to launch a series of new models in the Indian market, starting with a seven-seater SUV. Called the Gravitas is an extended version of the Harrier SUV that is expected to launch during this year's festive season.

Ahead of its launch, the SUV has been showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo and has been spotted multiple times testing in India. Latest spy images from Rushlane reveals a heavily-camouflaged mule testing in Coimbatore.

The images also reveal the test mule to be equipped with a rear disc brake. The company might have upgraded the braking hardware to improve the stopping performance of the large SUV. Apart from that, we also noticed a new five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheel on the test mule.

The Gravitas was expected to be launched sometime during the first half of 2020. Like most product launches in the country, the upcoming SUV's launch has been delayed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking about the design details, the Gravitas will borrow most of its features from the Harrier SUV including the split-headlamp setup. However, the rear of the SUV has been tweaked a little with a major change being a flat roof-line as compared to the swooping design of the Harrier.

The change in rear design could have been done to accommodate more headroom for the third-row passengers. The Gravitas SUV is 62mm longer than the standard Harrier. Whether this will translate to more room on the inside remains to be seen.

The engine and transmission options on the Gravitas will also be borrowed from the Harrier SUV. This includes a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, ‘Kryotec' diesel engine that churns out 168bhp and 350Nm of torque.

It comes mated to a standard six-speed manual gearbox, with an optional six-speed automatic. We expect the same powertrain options to be offered on the Gravitas SUV with a slightly higher state of tune to support the extra weight.

Once launched, the Tata Gravitas will rival the Mahindra XUV500 and the recently launched MG Hector Plus in the Indian market. There are few other three-row SUVs from Hyundai, Kia and Jeep that will be introduced soon In India. Although the Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner are placed way above, the Gravitas could be a cheaper alternative.

In related news, Tata Motors is expected to add two new variants of the Harrier SUV. Considering both the new variants will be slotted in between the existing variants the XT+ and the XTA could be priced around Rs 17 lakh, ex-showroom — here are more details.
