Supreme Court Is Likely To Extend BS4 Vehicle Registrations Post Lockdown

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, a lot of businesses have either shut or slowed down. India is currently under a lockdown situation which was supposed to be lifted on April 15. Seeing the current scenario, our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has announced an extension of the nationwide lockdown till May 3, 2020.

Due to the lockdown, a lot of automobile manufacturers are on the verge of shutting their dealerships permanently. Moreover, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) will be approaching the Supreme Court to review the BS4 ha vehicles registration deadline.

Previously, on March 27, 2020, the Supreme Court had ordered that the BS4 emission standard vehicles which were sold before March 31, 2020, can be registered until April 30, but now since the lockdown has been extended, things have to wait. The RTOs are set to reopen only on May 3, so an extension for the registration is required.

As per the records, there are 1,05,000 BS4 two-wheelers, 2,250 BS4 passenger vehicles and 2,000 BS4 commercial vehicles that have been sold but could not be registered due to the lockdown situation. Also as per the FADA, the unsold BS4 inventory with dealers across the country is numbered at 7,00,000 two-wheelers, 15,000 passenger vehicles and 12,000 commercial vehicles.

Also, the Supreme Court had ordered that automotive retailers will be allowed to sell only 10 percent of the unsold BS4 vehicles for 10 days post the lockdown. Now, since the lockdown has been extended the retailers will have a buffer time between May 4 to May 13 to sell BS4 stock.

Well, since the lockdown has been further extended, everything across the nation remains shut. As far as the BS4 vehicle registration is concerned, the Supreme Court's order will help the dealers across India to empty their BS4 stocks and not bear a complete loss.
