Skoda Rapid BS6 Bookings Open: To Feature 1.0-Litre TSI Petrol Engine
Skoda India has started accepting bookings for the Rapid BS6 model. The Skoda Rapid will feature an all-new BS6 complaint 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. The booking amount for the BS6 Rapid is set at Rs 50,000 with deliveries to begin from April 14, 2020.
A Bangalore-based dealer confirmed that the new 1.0-litre engine will be offered initially with a manual transmission only. However, an optional automatic will be offered at a later date. Also, the 1.6-litre petrol engine and the 1.5-litre diesel engine will no longer be on offer.
The 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine is the same as the one introduced in the BS6-spec Polo and Vento. It produces 110hp and 175Nm of torque. We expect the power figures to remain identical for the Rapid as well.
The engine that are currently offered on theSkoda Rapidare: a 1.6-litre petrol producing 104bhp and 153Nm of torque, and a 1.5-litre diesel unit churning out 109bhp and 250Nm of torque. The 1.6-litre petrol engine is offered with a five-speed manual transmission and a six-speed torque converter, while the 1.5-litre diesel unit is offered with a six-speed manual and a seven-speed DSG automatic transmission.
All the engines and transmission options currently on offer are expected to be discontinued from the brand. The 1.5-litre will not be carried forward due to lack of BS6 compliance. However, the 1.6-litre petrol engine is offered in a BS6 complaint format on the Volkswagen Vento. What remains to be seen is weather Skoda will continue to offer the 1.6-litre in its BS6 format on the Rapid.
Apart from the engine, not many changes are expected to the BS6 model. The Skoda Rapid will continue to feature LED projector headlamps with integrated LED DRLs, ambient interior lighting, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a rearview camera with guidelines, and cruise control; among others.
The Skoda Rapid rivals the Volkswagen Vento, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and the upcoming 2020 Honda City in the Indian market. The Skoda Rapid with the 1.0-litre engine is expected to be priced slightly higher than the outgoing model.
Thoughts About The Skoda Rapid BS6 Bookings Open
The Skoda Rapid with its new powertrain will be much more fuel-efficient and offer optimum performance. With the current shift from BS4 to BS6, the demand for diesel engines has decreased. However, offering only a single powertrain option could affect the sales numbers. Will this encourage the brand to feature the higher capacity petrol engines in the Rapid? We will report back when we hear more from the company.
