Coronavirus Lockdown: Karnataka Cops Ban Use Of Private Vehicles Until 14th Of April

The Commissioner of Police, Karnataka recently took to Twitter to announce a ban on the use of private vehicles in the state during the remainder of the lockdown period.

The Karnataka DGP stated that the use of private vehicles until the 14th of April has been banned. Any such vehicle found violating the lockdown regulations will be seized immediately. The ban came into effect from the 1st of April, with the twitter message stating,

"This is not an April Fool's prank. Two/ four-wheelers are banned from use till the 14th of April. We will SEIZE your vehicle if you CEASE to ignore this lockdown regulation."

The state police also announced that residents will have to walk to the nearest essential service store for any purchase. All seized private vehicles between the 1st to 14th of April will be handed over back to their owners only after the end of the lockdown period.

Karnataka Cops Ban Private Vehicle During Lockdown

Bhaskar Rao, Commissioner of Police, Karnataka also stated in a separate tweet that they have already seized close to 6000 vehicles in the state. According to the tweet, Bangalore City Police have seized over 5000 bikes/scooters, close to 200 three-wheelers and around 250 cars already.

The lockdown is part of the central government's efforts to reduce the spread of coronavirus in the country, PM Narendra Modi announced a 21-day lockdown starting from the 24th of March 2020.

As part of the lockdown, all operations apart from essential services will be shut down. Only essential services such as groceries, hospitals, police, food delivery personnel and ambulances will be allowed on the roads.

Karnataka Cops Ban Private Vehicle During Lockdown

Most automobile companies have shut operations across the country. The companies are now working towards the production of medical equipment and aids; supporting the government to fight the deadly virus.

Many companies have also donated large amounts of donations and relief packages. These will be used to procure medical equipment, develop facilities, upgrade hospitals and set up temporary structures for COVID-19 patients.

The decision to ban and seize the use of private vehicles during the lockdown is a good step in ensuring residents stay at home and stay safe. The ban on private vehicles also acts as a strong deterrent for many who violate lockdown regulations as well.
