Porsche 914 Successor In The Works: Entry-Level, Purists’ Car From Porsche Coming Soon
The Porsche 914 might just make a comeback, according to statements made by Michael Mauer, the Head of Design at the Volkswagen Group. This development has just affirmed the rumours that a back-to-basics Porsche for the purists is in the making.
The Porsche 914 is a two-Seater, mid-engined sports car that came about as a result of an collaboration between Volkswagen and Porsche. It was produced between 1969 & 1976 and over 1.18 lakh units of the car were produced.
It was targeted at entry-level buyers who were purists but couldn't afford the more expensive 911 range. The Porsche 914 then seems like the perfect car for the designers of the upcoming affordable sports car to draw inspiration from.
In the Porsche line-up, the 911 range sits at the top while it also has entry-level models like the Boxster and Cayman. However these entry-level models are still expensive and hence, Porsche is looking to bring in yet another model on the lines of the old 914.
In an interview posted on Porsche's newsroom, the company has spoken of the 914 and its history and also stressed on how it was a typical Porsche in terms of engineering. In the same interview, Mauer was asked about the future of the mid-engined 914 and his reply was, "A cheaper, entry-level Porsche would be the right thing to do."
This only goes to show that Porsche has been considering this for a while now. He went on to say, "We have this discussion all the time. A modern 550 in the broadest sense - a very simple, unpretentious car."
He further hinted towards Porsche considering two alternatives as the successor to the 914. The first alternative according to Mchael Mauer is "A car with almost no electrics, everything mechanical, puristic."
The second one being targeted at the group that drives cars like the Audi TT RS and VW Golf R32, etc. While he did not speak about the drivetrain of the upcoming car, it was quite clear that it would not be an electric vehicle.
His first statement made it clear that the upcoming car would be me mechanical and puristic with almost no electrics. The second statement too hinted at a petrol-powered car. The Porsche Boxster and Cayman already cater to buyers of vehicles like the Audi TT RS and VW Golf R32.
However, these 718 models are set to go the electric way very soon, leaving a void in that space for enthusiasts. Hence, Porsche could be considering a ‘puristic' petrol-powered drivetrain. The existing range of flat-four-cylinder engines are perfectly suited for the job.
Thoughts On Porsche Considering The Launch Of A Successor To The 914
Michael Mauer is one of the best automotive designers in the world, today. He was the one behind the design of the legendary Mercedes-Benz SLK. To see people like him talk about ‘puristic' cars, brings a lot of joy to us enthusiasts who are annoyed with the number of electric cars coming out. Well, Porsche might soon have a car for us to have fun with.
