Mitsubishi To Introduce New SUVs In The Indian Market: A Comeback Innings For The Japanese Brand
Mitsubishi, the Japanese carmaker has been in the Indian market for quite a long while now. However, they never really managed to establish themselves in the country. The brand introduced a number of products in the country over the years, from the Lancer sedan to the Outlander and Pajero SUVs. While the Pajero did receive some success, none of the other models managed to perform well.
The Japanese carmaker currently has no vehicles on sale in the Indian market. Although, they have started accepting bookings for the BS6-compliant Outlander SUV, which is expected to launch in India soon.
Now, according to a report from Express Drives, the Japanese carmaker is all set to make a comeback in the Indian market. Reports suggest that Mitsubishi has received a new investor in the country, which could see the brand introduce new vehicles in the market very soon.
The new investor to Mitsubishi is said to be based out of Jamshedpur. They are a major component manufacturer and supply parts to a number of large OEMs in the country as well. As per reports, the investor is said to bring in Rs 500 crore worth of investment over the next couple of years. The investment will be used to set up a manufacturing plant with a new assembly line.
Mitsubishi follows a standard plan of introducing a CBU model first in a new market, before getting into the assembly. The company is said to carry forward this procedure in its second innings in the Indian market as well.
Given the current market trend, it is very likely that Mitsubishi will be looking at introducing an SUV in the country. This could be either in the mid-size (Hyundai Creta rival) or full-size (Toyota Fortuner rival) SUV segment.
Mitsubishi does state that, as part of the second-innings the Indian arm of the brand will be the one to call the shots. This includes deciding the models which enter the Indian market and its pricing as well. The Japanese manufacturer will also price their upcoming SUVs more competitively, by increasing localisation of parts.
Reports also suggest that the brand is currently looking at the Eclipse and Eclipse Cross, two of the latest global products from the brand, for the Indian market.
Apart from the new models, Mitsubishi is also looking at setting up new dealerships across the country. Currently, the brand has just 11 dealerships in India, this number will, however, be increased to triple-digits in the coming years.
Thoughts About Mitsubishi Making A Comeback In The Indian Market
Mitsubishi making a comeback in the Indian market is extremely exciting to see. However, the company is still in talks with its investor, with an official announcement to be confirmed only by September. Post that it could take the company a couple more months to put all its plans into place, before actually introducing a product.
