New Entry-Level Hyundai SUV Under Consideration For Indian Market: Will Rival The Maruti S-Presso
Hyundai is said to be considering the introduction of an all-new entry-level model for the Indian market. Currently, the Hyundai Santro is the base model in the brand's product lineup in India. The new product under consideration, if introduced, will be positioned below the Santro hatchback.
According to an interview with carandbike, Tarun Garg, Sales & Marketing, Hyundai Motor India stated that they are currently performing a market study to introduce a new entry-level model in the country. The new entry-level model could come in the form of a micro-SUV, which could rival the likes of the Maruti S-Presso and the Renault Kwid.
According to Garg, Hyundai is looking at the entry-level segment as a way of attracting first-time car buyers in India. This will help the brand retain customers as they move into higher segments.
The hatchback segment in India is where the mass volume sales happen. Hyundai has done well in this segment, with three models which have performed extremely well in India: Santro, NIOS and i10 Grand.
Hyundai even had the Eon hatchback on sale in India. The Hyundai Eon was the brand's entry-level hatchback in the country since its launch in 2011. However, the car was discontinued last year, with Santro taking over the title of the brand's entry-level model.
Also unlike most other manufacturers, Hyundai continues to offer hatchbacks with BS6-compliant diesel engines as well. The availability of diesel-powered hatchbacks has further helped the company, proving there is still demand for the same.
The current entry-level model in Hyundai lineup, the Santro is powered by 1.1-litre BS6-compliant petrol engine. It produces 63bhp and 99Nm of peak torque and is mated either to a five-speed manual or AMT automatic transmission. The Santro also comes powered by a 1.1-litre CNG unit as well. This produces 55bhp and 85Nm of torque and is mated to a standard five-speed manual gearbox.
Thoughts About The New Entry-Level Hyundai Model For India
The new entry-level Hyundai model for the Indian market is still a long time away. The company is still performing market tests to evaluate the need for a new model in the segment. However, if Hyundai does introduce a new entry-level model it will rival the likes of the Maruti S-Presso and the Renault Kwid, while also carrying a similar price tag.
