Japanese auto manufacturer Honda, is gearing up to launch the all-new 2020 City in the Indian market. The sedan was scheduled to launch much earlier, however, due to the on-going Covid-19 pandemic, and the subsequent lockdown announced in the country, there has been a major delay with the 2020 City's launch.

In addition to the upcoming launch, the company has also announced that it plans to sell the fifth generation City alongside its previous-generation (fourth) model. The decision has been taken in order to give more buying options to the customers and target a wider audience.

The company has also ruled out bulk sales of current City to fleet operators. Honda says the City has always been bought by customers for personal use, and the company will continue to keep following the same strategy for the popular brand in India.

Confirming the new City's launch plans in a press meet, Rajesh Goel, Senior Vice President and Director, Marketing and Sales, Honda Cars India Ltd, said, "The current COVID-19 crisis is an unprecedented situation and we have to overcome challenges on many fronts including supply chain, production, sales activity at dealerships and of course the market sentiment. As a manufacturer, it's our responsibility to launch our latest models which can help us create fresh excitement in the market."

Talking about the changes on the 2020 Honda City, it will be offered with two engine options: a 1.5-litre DOHC petrol engine that will produce 120bhp and 150Nm of torque — 2bhp and 5Nm more than the older-generation engine. Another engine on offer will be a 1.5-litre diesel unit that produces 100bhp and 200Nm of torque. Both engines are expected to be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox and an optional CVT automatic transmission.

The new-gen Honda City has also been revised with a new exterior design. This includes a new LED headlight, Z-shaped wrap-around LED tail-lights, reworked bumper design at both ends and new alloy wheels; among others.

On the inside, the 2020 Honda City receives a few additional features including a new eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The system will support Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a segment-first Alexa Remote voice assistance feature. Honda will also offer its app-based connected technology called the ‘Honda Connect'.

Other features include a G-meter to measure the cornering forces, which are found on performance cars, a new semi-digital instrument cluster with a seven-inch full-colour display, steering-mounted controls for the audio system, cruise control, and a revised climate control unit with physical rotary knobs.

The fifth-generation Honda City has seen a huge improvement in the safety department as well. It will feature a lane-monitoring camera on the left-wing mirror that will relay feed to the centre screen and alert the driver of any approaching traffic on the wrong side. Additionally, the next-gen sedan will also feature traction control, an electronic stability programme, hill-start assist, a low-tyre-pressure warning system, six airbags, and a host of other features.
