Maserati MC20 Unveiled Globally: A Supercar Combining Italian Design & F1 Technology
Italian luxury car manufacturer, Maserati has globally unveiled the MC20 supercar. The new Maserati MC20 stands for Maserati Corse 2020 and marks the Brand's entrance into a new era. The MC20 borrows its design inspiration from its predecessor model the MC12.
The MC20 features a new V6 engine called the Nettuno, that is developed by Maserati in Modena. The highlight of the all-new engine is that it uses patented F1 technology and features a pre-combustion chamber.
The 3.0-litre engine produces 622bhp at 7500rpm and a peak torque of 730Nm between 3000rpm and 5500rpm. The engine comes mated to an eight-speed DCT with power sent to rear wheels.
The Italian supercar can accelerate from 0 to 100kmp/h in under 2.9 seconds and continue to reach a top speed of over 325 km/h. The MC20 also features a limited-slip differential along with an optional electronic differential offered by the company.
Stefano Tonietto, Maserati Design Project Leader, said, "Our direct competitors have rather different architectures; the only one with a V6 is the Honda NSX; the others all have larger displacements than ours, so if we make a comparison if we look at a Lamborghini it's got more horsepower, but what exactly has it got under the bonnet? It's always a bit difficult to discuss this is absolute terms; it's better to think in terms of a common factor, such as displacement. For example, for displacement/power output ratio we're best in class compared to our main competitors."
The MC20 features a sleek design as the company have used enhanced aerodynamics under the car to push the car down, rather than using a conventional rear wing at the back. According to the company, it gives the car a clean look.
At the front there are sleek-looking LED headlamps with integrated DRLs flanked on either side of the grille. A huge Maserati logo is placed at the centre of the grille along with two scoops placed on either side of the hood for aerodynamic ability.
At the rear, the sleek design continues with sharp and aggressively shaped tail-lamps, a rear diffuser, twin exhaust and a small chick to simulate a spoiler. The mid-engined supercar features butterfly doors and 20-inch alloy wheels with a radical design.
Maserati also announced that almost the entire car is made using carbon fibre, which will help to keep the weight down. As a result, the MC20 tips the scale at under 1500 kilograms. Combined with a power of 621bhp, it makes the car extremely agile with excellent handling characteristics.
On the inside, the MC20 features a blue and black theme with a clean and elegant design approach. The supercar features racing bucket seats with contrasting stitching making for a sporty look.
The cabin features two 10.25-inch screens one for the instrument cluster and another for the floating touchscreen infotainment display that supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and the brand's (MIA) Maserati Intelligent Assistant with connected technology. MIA also enables activation of Amazon Alexa services or a Wifi Hotspot inside the Maserati.
Some of the other features include an Alcantara finished upholstery, a digital (IRVM) Internal Rear View Mirror, rectangular air-con vents, six-speaker premium sound system by Sonos, a centre console finished in carbon fibre and a multifunction sports steering wheel with a mix of Alcantara and carbon fibre. The paddle-shifters behind the steering wheel are finished in carbon fibre as well.
MC20 has five driving modes, selected using the selector in the centre of the tunnel: Wet, GT, Sport, Corsa and the last one being the ESC Off. Each one is identified by its colour on the instrument cluster.
Maserati is offering the MC20 with a host of colours options. This includes Bianco Audace (Yellowish/White), Giallo Genio (Blue/Yellow), Rosso Vincente (Red), Blu Infinito (Blue), Nero Enigma (Black), and Grigio Mistero (Dark Grey). According to the company, the colours options are originated and inspired by great models of the brand in the past.
Andrea Bertolini, GT1 world champion in the MC12, now Maserati's chief test driver, said, "I've been working on simulators for 15 years now, and I can assure you that the Maserati dynamic simulator is truly at the state of the art: it's the most advanced in the world today. A tool like this virtual driving simulator enables us to cut development times while simultaneously increasing the precision with which the car is developed, since it enables very fast interaction, and changes can be made in real-time."
He further added, "Maserati is about to face a new era: we are Maserati, and we will always seek to deliver the absolute best. With the MC12, we have an impressive legacy to manage with the greatest care; so we know - it's clear for us all to see - what we have to achieve with our car. In the final analysis, we want to write the next chapter in Maserati's history."
The Maserati MC20 was unveiled at the brand's factory in Modena, Italy. The company has upgraded its state-of-the-art facility to accommodate the manufacturing of new MC20 supercar. It is expected to arrive sometime next year and could be priced under USD 200,000 in international markets.
Thoughts About The Maserati MC20 Unveiled Globally
Maserati has made a car that is inspired by its predecessor model in terms of design. However, they have combined the rich racing heritage with modern technology and state-of-the-art equipment and features to spawn the supercar for the new era. The MC20 brings the best of performance and design to the table.
