Mahindra XUV300 T-GDI Turbo Petrol Spotted Testing

Mahindra had showcased the XUV300 Sportz variant at the 2020 Auto Expo with an all-new BS6-compliant 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol GDI engine. However, we spotted the XUV300 T-GDI testing without wraps on the outskirts of Bangalore.

Our reporter also mentioned that the new XUV500 was also being tested alongside, but unfortunately, we could not snap it. Speaking about the XUV300's engine, the unit will be a 1.2-litre mStallion engine and will produce 128bhp of power and 230Nm of peak torque, making it more powerful than the XUV300's current BS6-compliant petrol engine. The engine comes mated to a six-speed manual transmission. This engine will make the XUV300 the most powerful petrol-powered compact SUV in its segment.

On the outside, since this will be a sporty variant, the company might add a few tweaks than the existing XUV300. This might include tweaked bumpers, different alloy wheels, contrast stitching on the seats and sporty graphics.

On the other hand, the second-generation Mahindra XUV500 will come with an all-new monocoque platform and will also be loaded with a host of updates and added features, along with significant changes to its design and styling as well.

As far as the engine is concerned, Mahindra is expected to introduce the new-gen XUV500 with a new 2.0-litre mStallian turbo-petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel unit. Both of them will come with the choice of either manual or automatic transmission units.

In other recent Mahindra news, the 2020 Mahindra Thar will be available with an optional automatic transmission. Mahindra is expected to launch the new-generation Thar in September 2020. The new-gen SUV was expected to arrive much earlier in the country, however, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the launch had to be delayed.

Mechanically, we expect the new Thar to be powered by a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel unit and a new 2.0-litre ‘TGDi mStallion' turbo-petrol engine that was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. Both engines are expected to come mated to a six-speed manual transmission with a low-ratio gearbox as standard.

Thoughts About The XUV300 Sportz Variant

As we mentioned above, the XUV300 T-GDI turbo petrol engine will be the most powerful compact SUV in the segment. Once launched, the XUV300 T-GDi will go up against the likes of the Hyundai Venue, the Tata Nexon, the Maruti Vitara Brezza, and the Ford EcoSport.
