Coronavirus Outbreak: Mahindra Produces First Set Of Ventilator Prototypes Within 48 Hours
Anand Mahindra had previously announced that the company is researching the possibility of producing ventilators, to support the hospitals and health institutions fighting against the coronavirus.
Now, Anand Mahindra has taken to Twitter to announce that the team at Mahindra have readied the first set of ventilator prototypes, within 48 hours. Anand Mahindra posted a video of the team who worked on getting the ventilator prototypes ready. The team stated that achievement comes after long hours of research.
The teams who worked on the Ventilator prototypes are from the company's Igatpuri and Mumbai plants. Anand Mahindra commented on Twitter:
"So, so proud of our Kandivali & Igatpuri teams who confined themselves to the factories & without sleep produced this in 48hrs. With humility, we will seek guidance from specialists on the usefulness of the device. Whatever the outcome, they have shown India fights back..."
Following the first set of ventilator prototypes, the teams at Mumbai and Igatpuri will now get to work on 3 more prototype models. These 3 new models will be based on further research being done, along with the feedback received from experts. The team aims to finish the 3 new prototypes in the next 3 days.
Anand Mahindra also announced that the ventilators produced would cost in the range of just Rs 7,500; a drastic difference compared to other devices which currently cost anywhere between Rs 5 to 10 lakh.
Pawan Goenka, MD, Mahindra & Mahindra also took to Twitter to announce the future plans of the company. He stated that the company is currently working with two PSU (Public Sector Undertakings) and an existing ventilator manufacturer in India. Mahindra will help by simplifying the design and scale-up production as well.
Goenka also stated that the company is also working on an automated version of the Ambu bag (a.k.a Big Valve Mask Ventilator). These prototypes should be ready within the next 2 to 3 days and will be sent to receive the necessary approvals.
Thoughts On The Mahindra Ventilator Prototypes
It is extremely good to see automobile manufacturers support the government and health institutions to fight the coronavirus pandemic, currently causing havoc around the world. The lockdown announced in India, along with the suspension of car production, has allowed companies like Mahindra to support the government in containing the spread of the deadly virus.
