Lewis Hamilton Wins An Unpredictable Turkish GP: Equals Michael Schumacher’s 7 World Titles
Lewis Hamilton clinched yet another victory, winning an unpredictable Turkish Grand Prix after starting sixth on the grid. The British driver further went on to claim his seventh world championship title, equalling Michael Schumacher's record from 2004. Sergio Perez and Sebastian Vettel finished on top of the podium in second and third, respectively.
The race started off well for Racing Point, with both Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez holding on to the top-2 positions during the first half of the race. Max Verstappen from Red Bull was close on the heels of Sergio Perez, however, an adventurous move to overtake Perez saw him spin out and lose his third position.
Sebastian Vettel who started from 14th on the grid, was quick to make up places in the first lap. The spin from Max Verstappen further helped Vettel quickly enter the top four, with Hamilton behind him.
As the race progressed, the track quickly began to dry up at certain places, allowing drivers to change from full wets to intermediate tyres. This tyre change allowed both Ferrari drivers to find pace. Lance Stroll who was leading the race, however, suffered heavy graining which resulted in him losing out massively.
While most drivers, including Sebastian Vettel pitted twice, Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez just stopped once. This allowed both drivers to take track position in first and second place, respectively.
Sebastian Vettel who was running in fourth position, found himself overtaking his teammate Charles Leclerc in the last corner just before the chequered flag came out. Leclerc, who was trying to overtake Sergio Perez, locked up and went out of the racing line, allowing Vettel to clinch his maiden podium this season.
Lewis Hamilton, however, won with a massive lead of close to 28 seconds from Sergio Perez in second place. With the win at the Turkish Grand Prix, Hamilton also confirmed his seventh World Championship title. Hamilton won his first world championship in 2008 with Mclaren, while subsequently winning with Mercedes-AMG Petronas in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and now in 2020.
Thoughts On Lewis Hamilton Clinching His 7th World Title
Lewis Hamilton has now equaled the record of Michael Schumacher with seven formula-one world titles. The British drove excellently on tough conditions at the Turkish GP, showing us exactly why he is considered one of the greatest of all times.
