Honda To Discontinue The Diesel Civic As The BS6 Norms Kick In
The India-spec Honda Civic was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. Honda launched its eight-generation Civic last year and at the time of launch, the sedan was offered with both petrol (BS6) and a diesel (BS4) engine. However, since the BS6 regulations have kicked in from 1st April 2020, the company had to discontinue the diesel units.
The new Civic gets full LED headlight units with Daytime Running Lights. The front bumper follows the aggressive lines of the grille and the lights and gives the Civic's front end a rather pointed look. It also features chrome surrounds for the LED fog lamps. From the side, the car looks fantastic and sits on 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. At the rear, the car gets C-shaped LED taillamps and a small raised boot lip spoiler.
Moving inside, the car features a dark theme, which is broken up by the ivory leather upholstery of the seats. The dashboard and the upper panels of the doors also feature soft-touch materials which give the Civic a rather premium feel. The infotainment system features a seven-inch touchscreen display that offers connectivity options for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with the usual Bluetooth and USB slots.
Under the hood, the Civic featured a 1.6-litre diesel unit (now discontinued) capable of producing 118bhp of power and 300Nm of torque. It was only available with a six-speed manual transmission. Honda had been offering the diesel variants of the Civic with heavy discounts worth up to Rs 2.5 lakh to clear up its BS4 inventory.
So now the Civic is only available with the 1.8-litre petrol engine mated to a CVT automatic. The engine produces 140bhp of power and 174Nm of peak torque. The petrol Civic continues to be offered in three variants - V, VX and ZX - with prices ranging from Rs 17.94 lakh to Rs 21.25 lakh (ex-showroom).
Thoughts On The Discontinuity Of The Diesel Civic
Now since the BS6 norms have kicked in manufacturers are no longer allowed to produce the BS4 variant vehicles. But, there might be some good news and we expect Honda to get the BS6 variant of the diesel Civic for the Indian Market in the near future.
