Gordon Murray T.50: The Purest, Lightest & Most Driver-Centric Supercar Ever Built

Gordon Murray Automotive has taken the wraps off the all-new T.50 - an ultra-lightweight, mid-engined, three-seater supercar. The new T.50 supercar is said to be the purest, lightest and most driver-centric car ever built, designed by Gordon Murray who is also responsible for one of the most iconic supercars of the last century, the McLaren F1.

The name 'T.50' for the latest supercar is to celebrate the 50-year career of Gordon Murray. The T.50 supercar is also the 50th car (road and race) designed by Murray.

The brand new Gordon Murray T.50 supercar is powered by a 3.9-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine. It produces 654bhp at 11,500rpm and 467Nm of peak torque at 9000rpm. However, the engine built by Cosworth is said to redline at 12,100rpm while 71% of the max torque is available as low as 2500rpm.

The T.50 supercar is also extremely lightweight, tipping the scale at just 986kg; making it the lightest road-going supercar in the world. This also allows the T.50 to also have the best power-to-weight ratio of 663bhp per tonne.

The engine itself will be available in two-states-of-tune, first being where the engine is limited to 9000rpm offering more low-end grunt. The second state-of-tune allows the car to rev completely to the 12,100rpm redline.

Talking about the driving experience, Gordon Murray stated:

"From the first touch of the titanium throttle pedal to the V12 screaming at 12,100rpm, the driver experience will surpass any supercar ever built. No other road car can deliver the package of power, instant responsiveness and driver feedback in such a direct and focused way while remaining comfortable, refined and usable every day."

The engine is said to be 100 per cent bespoke to the T.50 and claims to offer an unparalleled driving experience. The Gordon Murray T.50 also offers the most advanced and effective aerodynamics seen on any car, aided by the presence of a 400mm rear-mounted fan. This fan is powered by a 48V electric motor, which accelerates the airflow under the car to provide high downforce.

The fan is further supported by rear diffusers and aerofoils to further extend the amount of downforce. These offer a completely different level of stability to the supercar, both at high speeds and around corners.

The Gordon Murray T.50 supercar also comes with six aerodynamics modes, out of which: High Downforce, Vmax, Streamline and Test can be controlled manually from the cockpit. The remaining two, ‘Auto' and ‘Braking'; are controlled automatically depending on the speed, acceleration and other factors while driving.

The aerofoils on the rear of the Gordon Murray T.50 is, however, seamlessly integrated into the smooth design of the supercar itself. The design of the T.50 is clean, elegant and pure and doesn't make use of any wings, skirts and aero flaps; seen on most other modern supercars.

The T.50 has been entirely designed in-house, with Gordon Murray himself leading the team. Being a Gordon Murray design, there is an obvious resemblance to the iconic and much revered McLaren F1 supercar. This includes the clean lines, dihedral doors, compact sizing, ticket windows,centrally-mounted roof air-scoop and the centrally-positioned driver's seat.

Talking about the cabin, the Gordon Murray T.50 supercar carries forward the same pure driver-centric philosophy to the interiors as well. The centrally-positioned driver's seat is said to be much easier to get into (compared to the McLaren F1), while there is also enough space for two other passengers on either side. Surprisingly, the T.50 supercar also comes with a rather spacious 300-litre boot capacity.

The cockpit itself seems to be inspired by a fighter-jet, with two screens; one for the infotainment and the other being the main instrument console. The AC vents are positioned discreetly above the two screens for the driver, while AC vents for the passengers are located on the doors. There are also analogue switchgear and instrumentation around the cockpit, to control various other functions as well.

Thoughts On The Gordon Murray T.50 Supercar

Gordon Murray, the man who gave the world the McLaren F1 has now revealed its successor in the form of T.50 supercar. The all-new 986kg, V12-powered supercar is said to be, in Gordon Murray's own words, an improvement over the McLaren F1 "in every conceivable way".
