Geneva Motor Show 2021 Cancelled In Light Of Covid-19 Pandemic
In what comes as no surprise, the Geneva Motor Show 2021 has been cancelled as result of a majority of manufacturers announcing that they would not be participating at the event in light of the Covid-19 pandemic that has gripped the world.
The event was originally scheduled to be held in Switzerland earlier this year, but was cancelled at the last minute, leaving organisers to deal with financial shortfall.
The Foundation of the Geneva International Motor Show (FGIMS) has been discussing plans for the future of the event and has been meeting with the State of Geneva about a loan to keep its future going but have now cancelled plans for next year.
A statement released by the Foundation of the Geneva International Motor Show said, "A majority of GIMS exhibitors who took part in a survey stated that they would probably not participate in a 2021 edition and that they would prefer to have a GIMS in 2022."
"The automotive sector is currently going through a difficult phase, and exhibitors need time to recover from the effects of the pandemic. Furthermore, it is far from certain that the current health situation would permit the organisation of an event attracting more than 6,00,000 visitors and 10,000 journalists next spring," it added.
The Foundation also said that they would refuse the Rs 133.30 crore loan from the State of Geneva given as a contingent for the event being organised in 2021.
The Foundation has also taken a decision to sell the Motor Show to Palexpo SA, the company that owns the Geneva Exhibition Center, with the intention of securing a long term future.
The Covid-19 situation has been bad news for the Motor Show industry. This year's New York Motor Show, Paris Motor Show, and Detroit Motor Show have been cancelled, while the Beijing Motor Show has been rescheduled for September this year.
Organisers of the Paris Motor Show have been vocal about the event not running in traditional formats. European organisers are also concerned about Germany's semiannual Motor Show that works in sync with the Paris calendar. The German Show is also scheduled to move from Frankfurt to Munich next year.
Thoughts About The Geneva Motor Show Being Cancelled
Expectations were that the Geneva Motor Show would be cancelled after two of Europe's biggest names, the BMW Group and KTM said they were not participating in this year's edition. While the move is welcomed at the moment, the future of all Motor Shows could be very different going forward.
