The Supreme Court Of India announced back in October 2018 that the final deadline for the sales of BS4 vehicles would be April 1, 2020. All vehicles sold and registered from today have to comply with the BS6 emission norms in the country. The Indian Government had also ordered petroleum manufacturers, well in advance, to make BS6 fuel available before the deadline.

Vehicles bought before BS6 updates were introduced will be permitted to run on the road till the end of their registration period. However, these vehicles will not be allowed to re-register or give a Fitness Certificate (FC) once the period ends.

The shift to BS6 has resulted in diesel models getting discontinued from most auto manufacturer's line-up. This is due to the increased costs involved in research and development of diesel engines to comply with the stricter emission norms. This has resulted in bidding goodbye to one of the most famous engines in the Indian market, the Fiat 1.3-litre MultiJet turbo-diesel engine. The engine was featured on the Maruti Swift, Fiat Punto, andTata Indica Vista; among others. Fiat has decided to stop manufacturing the smaller capacity diesel engine due to its outdated technology and costs involved to make it BS6 compliant.

Most auto manufacturers have planned and introduced their BS6 models in the country ensuring a smooth transition. However, some manufacturers are yet to announce their BS6 vehicle line-up in the country. The plans for the introduction of BS6 vehicles in the Indian market have slightly been delayed due to the COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown announced in the country.
