Best-Selling Cars In India In May 2020: Auto Industry Witnesses Major Reshuffling Post Lockdown
The Indian government relaxed a number of lockdown regulations across the country in mid-May. This allowed vehicle manufacturers to restart production and sales operations in India after a gap of almost two months.
Talking about car sales in May 2020, expectedly all manufacturers registered a major decline in their year-on-year sales. This was mainly due to the lockdown, which had shut all operations during the first half of the previous month.
Amidst the restart of operation, the Hyundai Creta became the best-selling car in India in May 2020. The all-new Hyundai Creta registered 3,212 units in the previous month, which is still a massive decline of 65% in May 2019 when it recorded over 9000 units. The Hyundai Creta is the first non-Maruti Suzuki model in a very long time to become the best-selling car in the country — here's how it happened.
Following the Hyundai Creta is the Maruti Ertiga MPV in second place. The MPV registered 2,353 units of sales last month to overtake most of its other more affordable siblings in the Indian market. The Maruti Ertiga though did register a 73% decline in a year-on-year sales comparison from May 2019.
The Maruti Dzire came third after registering 2,215 units of sales in May 2020. The Maruti Dzire has been on the top-step on multiple occasions and is the best-selling compact-sedan in the country.

The Mahindra Bolero is fourth on the list of best-selling cars in India. Mahindra is one of many car brands which have made it to the top-10 list for the first time in a long while. The Bolero SUV registered 1,715 units of sales in May, recording a 71 per cent decline compared to its sales from the same month last year.
Completing the top-five on the list is the Maruti Eeco. The budget-friendly van from Maruti Suzuki 1,617 units of sales last month. The Eeco is a common model in the top-10 best-selling car list and has continued to remain so even in the month of May.
The Kia Seltos fills up the sixth position in the list. The previous SUV segment leader has been knocked out of its position by its cousin, the Hyundai Creta. The Kia Seltos registered 1,611 units of sales, just six short of the Maruti Eeco in fifth.
The seventh and eighth position on the list is the Maruti Baleno and the Maruti Alto. Both models are among the most popular products from the brand in the country. Both models registered a drastic decline of around 90% in sales, dropping to around 1,500 units each last month.
The last two slots in the top-10 list are the Tata Altroz and the Mahindra XUV300 - this is the first time either of the models have been on the list. The Tata Altroz registered 1,379 units while the Mahindra XUV300 recorded 1,257 units of sales.
Thoughts About Best-Selling Cars In India For May 2020
The Indian auto industry has suffered a major setback in terms of revenue over the last two months, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The industry also registered 0 units of sales for the first time in its history in April 2020. However, now with operations slowly restarting, we can expect demand to get back to near-normalcy in the coming months.
