Volvo Recalls More Than 5 lakh Cars Across The Globe As Risk Of Fire Has Been Detected

Volvo manufactures some of the safest cars on the plant. The Swedish company has pioneered several safety features in the past that are now the norm for safety on all cars. It was in 1959 that Volvo became the first to introduce three-point safety seatbelt.

Volvo was also the first to introduce side impact protection system, side curtain airbags, whiplash protection system, roll-over protection system, blind-spot information system, pedestrian detection with auto brake, etc.

Volvo also makes some of the cleanest engines in the world. Volvo has such a brilliant brand image in terms of safety that, it simply had to issue a large-scale recall when company officials learnt that there could be the smallest chance of a fire.

The affected cars are just the ones powered by the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. However, this engine has been used across several product lines including sedans, station wagons and SUVs built between 2014 and 2019.

The affected models include the Volvo S60, S60 Cross Country, S80, S90, V40, V40 Cross Country, V60, V60 Cross Country, V70, V90, V90 Cross Country, XC60, XC70 and XC90 models.

Of all these models, the ones that have been and are on sale in India include the Volvo S60, S90, V40, V40 Cross Country, V90 Cross Country, XC60 and XC90. The recall is in reaction to a few incidents of small fires in the engine bay.

Volvo is currently in the process of contacting all owners and letting them know about the potential warning signs. An early symptom of the problem is an abnormal smell.

More advanced warnings include engine interruption, loss of power and of course, the ‘check engine' warning indicator lights up. If these symptoms occur, the vehicle could potentially catch fire. Hence, Volvo advised that the drivers should immediately pull over and call Volvo's roadside assistance service.

If the problem is found to be related to the intake manifold melting, a repair will be carried out free of cost. However, Volvo also stated that it is safe to use the car if it is not showing any of the above symptoms.

A statement issued by Volvo stated, "The safety and continued satisfaction of our customers are very important to us. We take this situation very seriously and are working to finalise a fix for the cars. In the meantime, it is important we make customers aware of this potential issue so they are able to react accordingly should any symptoms indicating an issue occur."
