Top Five Electric Cars Launching In India — The Age Of Electrics Is Here
The 2019 Union Budget showed us that the government is all for transforming India into a global EV destination. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced additional tax benefits of Rs 1.5 lakh on the interest paid on loans taken for the purchase of electric vehicles. The government is also in the process of reducing GST rates on electric vehicles from 12 per cent to 5 per cent.
There are only a handful of electric four-wheelers available in the country at the moment. Choices are limited to the Tata Tigor EV, the Mahindra eVerito, and the Mahindra e20 Plus. However, this is all set to change over the next year.
Several auto manufacturers are expected to launch electric vehicles in the country. Domestic manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors are in the process of lining up with their products, and foreign manufacturers like Hyundai, Morris Garage, and Audi will soon launch their range of electrics in India.
Here are five electric vehicle that will change the game in India.
The Hyundai Kona
The Hyundai Kona electric SUV is scheduled to launch on July 9. Features of the car include a closed-off front grille, twin headlights with LED headlamps and DRLs, LED rear lamps, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The interiors feature a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and an 8-inch touch screen. There are two battery options available on the international-spec Hyundai Kona - a 39.2 kWh, and a 64.0 kWh. The electric SUV will feature a permanent-magnet synchronous motor. The standard trim will offer a range of 312km over a single charge, and the top-of-the-line variant will offer 482 kms. The vehicle is expected to be priced at about Rs 25 lakh, ex-showroom (India).
The Audi e-Tron
Audi plans to introduce its all electric SUV, the e-Tron, at some point during 2019. The SUV features two electric motors. The one at the front produces 170bhp and the one at the rear produces 190bhp. That's a combined output of 360bhp. Torque figures stand at 561Nm.
The vehicle also has a boost mode, wherein power values increase to 408bhp and 664Nm. The 5-seater SUV features a 95kWh Lithium-ion battery. It manages a top speed of 200kmph. The Audi e-Tron will arrive as a CBU and is expected to be priced at about Rs 1.15 crore, ex-showroom (India).
The MG EZS
The MG EZS electric SUV will be the second vehicle that Morris Garage launches in the country. The 5-seater is scheduled for December 2019 launch. MG has partnered with Finland based clean energy firm Fortum to install 50kW DC fast-charging EV stations across its showrooms in Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad. The MG EZS was unveiled in April 2019, and is manufactured at the company's Halol facility in Gujarat.
The Tata Altroz EV
Tata Altroz EV is expected to be launched in India in under two years. Based on the ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) architecture, the electric vehicle will be powered by a permanent magnet AC motor, and will be offered with a single speed gearbox.
Tata Motors claims that the battery can be charged in 60 minutes, and it offers a range of between 250kms and 300 kms. The Tata built all electric is expected to be priced at over the Rs 10 lakh mark, ex-showroom, (India).
The Maruti Suzuki WagonR EV
The Maruti Suzuki WagonR EV is scheduled to launch during 2020. There is not too much information floating around about the vehicle. Rumor has it that the WagonR EV will feature fast charging, and offer a range of about 200kms. Price are expected to be around the Rs 10 lakh mark, ex-showroom (India).
Thoughts About The Five EVs That Will Change the Electric Game In The Country
All the cars we've mentioned here are set to create history. While these cars are, and will be expensive at the beginning, we expect prices to drop once sales pick up. We're very hopeful about the move to electrics, and it's just a matter of time before India becomes 'the place to be for every electric vehicle manufacturer.
