Traffic Fines In Bangalore Reduced: State Government Announces Revised Fines Under New MVA
The Karnataka state government has announced a reduction in traffic fines in the city of Bangalore. The state government has reduced the new fines by 50 to 80% in the city under the new Motor Vehicles Act, 2019.
The revision of traffic fines in Bangalore came after heavy public demand to reduce the penalties for traffic violations in the city.
The reduction of traffic fines comes with mixed reactions among the public. Certain section of public agree with the reduction, stating the government to first concentrate on providing good road infrastructure in the city.
Another section of the public, disagree with the reduction arguing that there was a drastic improvement in terms of road safety. This was because motorists had become more aware and following the rules, to avoid the risk of paying hefty fines.
Having said this, here are some of the major traffic violations, for which the fines have been slashed.
Driving/Riding over the speed limit: All two and three-wheelers, along with light motor vehicles (LMVs) will now be fined Rs 1000, a reduction from the previous Rs 2000 fine amount. Penalties for all other vehicles has also been reduced to Rs 2000 from the previous Rs 4000.
Violating safety regulations: Two-wheelers caught with riders and pillions not wearing a helmet and other safety gear will now be charged Rs 500, compared to the previous Rs 1000 fine. Similarly, not wearing seatbelts while driving will also attract a reduced fine of Rs 500, a reduction from the previous Rs 1000 penalty.
Driving/Riding without insurance: All motorists caught driving without insurance previously attracted a fine of Rs 2000 for the first offence and Rs 4000 for all subsequent offences. These prices have now been slashed to Rs 1000 for two and three-wheelers, while LMVs and HGVs (heavy goods vehicles) will have to pay Rs 2000 and Rs 4000, respectively.
Driving vehicles over permissible weight: All trucks and buses carrying a load over the permissible limit will now be fined Rs 5000 for overloading and Rs 2000 for every additional tonne. The fine was earlier set at Rs 20,000 for overloading and Rs 2,000 for every extra tonne.
Violation of permit conditions: All vehicles violating the permit conditions will now be fined Rs 5,000 for the first offence and Rs 10,000 for every other subsequent offence. Previously, this violation attracted Rs 10,000 fine for the first offence and Rs 10,000 for every subsequent offence as well.
Thoughts On The Traffic Fine Reduction In Bangalore
The new Motor Vehicles Act, 2019 brought in a steep rise in the fine amounts for violations across the country. The increased traffic fines were implemented across all states from the 1st of September. However, after a major public outcry, regarding the hike of fines, many states have revised the fines.
The increase in traffic fines was introduced to discourage motorists from breaking the rules, in turn improving road safety across India.
