Toyota Yaris Sales Figures End Up Decent Despite The Tough Competition — Sells 10,799 Units In 2018

Toyota India shares that their latest Yaris sedan has sold 10,799 units in 2018 — quite a decent sales figure considering the tough competition showcased by the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Honda City and Hyundai Verna. Launched in India in April 2018 at a starting price of Rs 8.75 lakh, the Toyota Yaris is available only in a petrol format.

Recently, there were a lot of talks on various forums claiming that Toyota is struggling to sell the Yaris in the country. This is, in fact, true to a certain extent since the Toyota Yaris could attain only 389 units in sales in December 2018.

Some argue that the driving experience offered by the sedan is what which is to be blamed for this. We have already driven the Toyota Yaris in both manual and CVT formats — read the detailed review here.

This could also hint to a downward trend in sales figures in the coming months, even though crossing the 10,000 unit-milestone is considered an achievement. Meanwhile, its competitors are far ahead on the sales chart with the Indian Car Of The Year 2018, Hyundai Verna, in the lead.

Coming back to the Toyota Yaris, the 'global sedan' was introduced as the most feature-rich product in its class. The like-it-or-loathe-it design, gesture controls for the audio, the unusual (yet functional) roof-mounted rear AC vents; are some of its selling factors.

Though it is essentially a cost-cut version of the globally-sold Yaris Ativ, the India-spec model still managed to gain a five-star safety rating in ASEAN NCAP. Furthermore, the Toyota Yaris is the most comfortable sedan you can buy in its segment, thanks to the well-engineered suspension.

Regarding specifications, the Toyota Yaris is powered by a 1.5-litre dual-VVTi petrol engine which makes 105bhp and 140Nm of torque. The power plant is mated to a six-speed manual or a seven-step CVT.

Thoughts On The Toyota Yaris's Sales Milestone

The Toyota Yaris is definitely "a family sedan that's easy to like, but difficult to love". The Japanese brand aims it to be an ideal choice for working individuals between the age of 30 and 40, and the Yaris makes a lot of sense in this regard. This could be the reason why its tagline itself says, "All Sense. All Sedan."
